Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine situated in the north of the country. It's one of the oldest cities of Europe. Its history goes back to the 5th century AD. Kyiv stands on the picturesque banks of the Dnieper river and it’s very green. One half of Kyiv's territory is occupied by parks and gardens. It has 18 sq metres of greenery for a person.

Kyiv is rich in historical sights. You should not fail to visit St. Sophia Cathedral and the monument to Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. The cathedral has been created as the centre of learning and culture in Kyivan Rus.

The Kyiv- Pechersk Lavra is gorgeous in its design and decorations. It dates back to the 11th century. It’s an ancient monastery, the centre of Orthodox Christianity.

St Andrew’s Church was constructed in 1747-1754 by an Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. And Andriyivsky Descent (Uzviz) is very popular with tourists, they like to buy Ukrainian authentic souvenirs here.

The main street of the capital is Khreshchatyk. During World War II it was almost completely destroyed. And it was rebuilt in the post war years. There are a lot of fine buildings in Khreshchatyk. They form the unique architectural ensemble.

Kyiv is an ancient but ever young city. It is attracted by lots of tourists all the year round. However it’s especially beautiful in spring when the famous Kyiv chestnut trees are in blossom.
