“Sandwiches”, “Ham-burgers”, “Hot -Dogs”, “Fish &Chips”The 18-th century(1762). The Earl of Sandwich – the head of the English Navy in the American War of Independence invented a snack made of two pieces of bread with something in the middle. Popular fillings: tuna salad with mayonnaise, prawn cocktail with avocado, bacon, lettuce and tomato, cheese and pickles. The word “hamburger” comes from German city of Hamburg. The Americans invented the modern hamburger about 100 years ago. Now they forget the origin of the word and make cheeseburgers, beef-burgers, egg-burgers, fish-burgers.“Hot dog” is a sausage in a roll. A hot dog is a frankfurter; it got its name from the German town of Frankfurt. Year 1903, an American cartoonist drew a long German sausage dog in place of the frankfurter. So a frankfurter in a roll became as a “hot dog”. It was a joke, but some people really thought the sausages contained dog meat. Year 1870 – pommes de terre à la mode came from France. The English called them “chips”. People from poor families bought fast food in the street. The most popular was fried fish with a piece of bread. People put fish and chips in an old newspaper with a lot of salt and vinegar on the top. Today they are still very popular – but they come in clean white paper bags!

One of the oldest pubs, Fighting Cocks in St. Albans, Herts, is located in a building that dates back to the eleventh century. “Pubs are popular social meeting places”. Pubs are an important part of British life. People talk, eat, drink, meet their friends and relax there. Pubs often have two bars, one usually quieter than the other, many have a garden where people can sit in the summer. Children can go in pub gardens with their parents. Most pubs are open from 11 to 11. Nearly all pubs sell pub lunches. One of these is the Ploughman`s Lunch which is a great wedge of Cheddar cheese, some bread, some pickle, and an onion. Other typical pub foods are scampi (kind of shellfish) and chips (fried potatoes), pie and chips, and chicken and chips. Pubs have traditional names that date back over 600 years.
