UNIT 3 Family and Friends

Lesson 1. Family members

Objectives: to review numbers 1-6 ; to introduce and practice the names of family members; to practice new structure «This is my …»; to develop pupils` speaking skills

Vocabulary: family, mother, father, sister, brother

Structure: This is my …

Materials: flashcards, ball, pages to draw their families

Outcomes: by the end of the lesson pupils will be able to name, differ and point to some family members. They will be able to use new structure of the lesson.

Warm-up

1. Number Activities Game

Write numbers on the board. Divide the class into two teams and give

a pupil from each team a piece of chalk. Say a number. The first pupil to run

to the board and draw a circle round the correct number wins a point for their

team.

2. Counting Chain Game

Start a counting chain: the first pupil in the chain says “One”, the next pupil says “Two”, the next one “Three”, and so on. After “Six”, go back to “One” again. Any pupil who hesitates or says the wrong number is out. The last two or three pupils to remain in are the winners.

Presentation

1. Stick the family cards to the board (addition 1) Teach the words using the flashcards: a father, a mother, a sister, a brother. Point to a flashcard so that the whole class can see it. If necessary, walk round the room and show it to pupils. Pronounce every word clearly. Do choral and individual repetition. Follow the same procedure three or four times.

2. Explain to pupils that you are going to pretend that the characters on the flashcards are members of your family. Ask Ps to say ‘hello’ to everyone

Practice

1. Game «Secret Picture»

 Show cards with pictures, then the picture is almost completely closed, leaving a little bit piece,children should guess and call the word.

2. Game «Touch and Run»

Arrange cards with pictures throughout the classroom, on command , children must find the card and show the teacher. The one who first took the card and correctly showed it keep to yourself. The pupil with the most cards wins.

3. Game «Telephone»

 Game in which players form a line,  the teacher talk to  the first player the word and then he or she whispers it to the ear of the second person in the line. The second player repeats the word to the third player, and so on. When the last player is reached, he/she announce the word he/she heard to the entire group.

4.Present the structure «This is my family»

Encourage pupils to repeat “This is my family” after you several times. Then point to each family member and present them This is my mother. This is my father. This is my sister. This is my brother. they hear and than repead again making pauses for your pupils to repeat after each family member.

5. Combine pupils into two or three teams. At first, you point to a picture with one family member, and then to a team that has to say what this picture means using the structure «This is my…»

6. Pupils draw their families and then ask your pupils to work in pairs pointing and naming the family members to each other (addition 2)

Ending

Draw pupils’ attention to the picture  on the board. Ask them say ‘goodbye’ to

every  family member, ‘Goodbye, father! Goodbye, mother! Goodbye, sister! Goodbye, brother!’
