Past Tenses Revision

We use past simple and past continuous together in one sentence when:

Past continuous shows a longer action happening in the past.

Past simple shows a shorter action that happened during the longer one.

I.Put the verbs in brackets using Past Simple or Past Continuous form to complete the sentences.

1.I ______________(read) a book when the phone ______________(ring).

2.She ______________(call) me while I ___________(work) on my project.

3.They ____________(play) football when it suddenly _____________ (start) to rain.

4.They _____________ (meet) each other while they ___________ (travel) in Europe.

5.She _______________ (cook) dinner while her husband __________(watch) TV.

6.I _____________(see) her at the mall while she _____________ (talk) on the phone.

7.We ______________(drive) to the beach when we______________ (see) a deer on the road.

8.I ___________(sleep) when the alarm ____________ off (go off).

9.He ___________(drop) his phone while he ____________(run) to catch the bus.

10.We ________________ (hear) a loud noise while we _____________ (walk) through the forest.

Use past simple when you talk about something that happened at a specific time in the past.
Example: She watched a movie yesterday.

Use past perfect when you talk about something that happened before another past time or event (even if it's in a different sentence).
Example: She was tired because she had worked all day.

II.Choose Past Simple or Past Perfect form to complete the sentences with the verbs in brackets.
