1: Hello dear guests and dear students. We are happy to welcome you at our meeting devoted to the English poetry. When a person learns a foreign language it is necessary to learn about the history and culture of the country. This knowledge will help you very much in learning the language and you will know the country better, you’ll be able to feel the language better. Today we are going to speak about some outstanding English poets. You’ll hear many wonderful poems.
What is Poetry? Who Knows?
Not a rose, but the scent of the rose;
Not the sky, but the light in the sky;
Not the fly, but the gleam of the fly;
Not the sea, but the sound of the sea;
Not myself, but what makes me
See, hear, and feel something that prose
Cannot: and what it is who knows?
Eleanor Farjeon
В. 1: But this party is not going to be all just boring. We are going to listen to some romantic songs and watch the video.
Let's start!
В. 2: Do you like to read? What sort of books do you prefer reading when you have free time? What English poets do you know? What are your favourite poems?
II.
В. 1: Our modern life is very fast and we can't stop and look around, think about the purpose of our life. And about this is the poem "Leisure" written by W.H. Davies.
S1:
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
В. 1: Rudyard Kipling, a famous English poet and writer was born in India, studied in England, lived in the USA. He was the first Englishman to receive the Nobel Prize for literature. His poem "If…" is very popular. Let's listen to it in the original and then we'll hear a wonderful translation by Василь Стус.

В. 1: Please welcome STUDENTS with a poem about love by a well-known Scottish poet Robert Burns "A Red, Red Rose".
A Red, Red Rose O my Love is like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Love is like the melody That’s sweetly played in tune.
So fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in love am I; And I will love thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry.
Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt with the sun; I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run.
And fare thee well, my only love! And fare thee well a while! And I will come again, my love, Though it were ten thousand mile.

Andy M. Stewart.
В. 1: The next poem is written by Robert Louis Stevenson. He is better known for his works in prose and less known for his poetry. A lot of you may have read his Treasure Island. And now, please, listen to his poem "The Vagabond" in which he expresses his love for travel, adventure and also his love for nature.
The VagabondGive to me the life I love, Let the lave go by me, Give the jolly heaven above And the byway night me. Bed in the bush with stars to see, Bread I dip in the river -- There's the life for a man like me, There's the life for ever.
Let the blow fall soon or late, Let what will be o'er me; Give the face of earth around And the road before me. Wealth I seek not, hope nor love, Nor a friend to know me; All I seek, the heaven above And the road below me.
