Saint Patrick was a person who lived in Ireland many-many years ago. He brought Christianity to Ireland. He used a leaf of shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.shamrock – конюшина. Holy Trinity – Свята Трійця

The Irish flag is green, white and orange.

The national symbol of Ireland is the shamrock (or clover). It has three leaves.

Another symbol of Ireland is the harp.

Ireland has its own ”little people” called leprechauns. A leprechaun looks like a small, old man, wearing old green clothes, a green hat and old shoes.

There is a legend that the leprechaun has got pot of gold. If you catch a leprechaun he will tell you where his gold is, or give you three wishes. Because everybody wants his gold, the leprechaun is often unfriendly and tries to hide from people.

People say that you can find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Do you know about the "luck of the Irish" ? On St. Patrick’s Day all the Irish are lucky! You must kiss an Irish person on this day to get luck, too !!!

People wear green clothes on St. Patrick’s Day. They also have shamrocks on their jackets. If you don’t wear green on this day, people can pinch you!pinch - вщипнути

People dance old national Irish step dances called reel and jig. They are very fast.

The traditional food on this day is meat with cabbage and Irish stew (meat, potatoes and onions cooked together). People also eat green sandwiches, green cakes and have green beer!

People who are not Irish celebrate this day, too. There are big St. Patrick’s parades. Bagpipes play Irish music and people sing and dance jigs.
