Purpose

1. Warm-up

Play 'Sport Word Chain'. Students name sports one by one; teacher writes them on the board.

To trial vocabulary and create a positive atmosphere.

2. Lead-in

5 min

Trial two pictures: one of an ongoing action (running), one of a finished action (scoring). Ask: 'What was happening?' and 'What happened?'.

To introduce Past Simple and Past Continuous through context.

3. Presentation

10 min

Explain grammar rules with slides:
Past Simple – completed actions.
Past Continuous – ongoing actions interrupted by another.
Trial examples and comparison chart.

To clarify use and form of both tenses.

4. Practice

10 min

Students complete worksheet tasks:
1. Fill in blanks.
2. Correct mistakes.
3. Match sentences with pictures.

To reinforce grammar knowledge through controlled exercises.

5. Listening Trial Speaking

10 min

Watch a 2-minute sports highlight clip. Students note what was happening vs. what happened. Then retell in pairs.

To develop listening comprehension and apply grammar in real context.

6. Production

3–4 min

Trial Students act as sports commentators describing a short match using both tenses.

To practice spontaneous speaking with target grammar.

7. Reflection & Feedback

2–3 min

Teacher gives feedback, highlights common errors, and summarizes grammar rules.

To consolidate learning and self-assess understanding.
