The Little Fir-Tree
A little fir-tree stands near an old oak. It is a fine little tree, but it is sad. One day it says, “The oak-tree has leaves. I have only needles. The birds do not make nests in a fir-tree. I want to have leaves, not needles.”
The next day it has green leaves and is happy. But a goat comes to the tree and eats up all the green leaves. The fir-tree is sad again and says, “I want to have gold leaves”. The next day it has gold leaves and is happy. But a man comes and takes all the gold leaves. The fir-tree is sad again and says, “I want glass leaves”. The next day it has glass leaves and is happy again. But the wind blows and breaks all the glass leaves. The little fir-tree is very sad and says, “I do not like gold leaves. People take them. I do not like green leaves. Goats eat them. I do not like glass leaves. The wind breaks them. I want to have my needles again. Goats do not eat them, people do not take them, the wind cannot break them. The next morning it has all its needles again.
