People and Their Values

Objectives:              to enlarge the pupils' knowledge on the topic;

to develop pupils’ speaking, reading skills through various creative activities;

to provide pupils with practice in listening comprehension. Procedure:

I. INTRODUCTION:

T: First of all, my dears, I want to tell you that we are happy, because we are healthy and we live in this wonderful world. But have you ever thought what the life is, what the values of life are?  People have been asking these questions since times immemorial and each generation tries to find the keys to them. Today we are going  to speak about people and their values of  life. We have a lot to do today. So, I hope you’ 11 be very active and supportive at our lesson.

II. WARMING UP:

To begin with I want you to listen to an old legend and to think about the most important values in our life.

LEGEND

There is an old legend. Long ago there lived two men. When their children were born they left their families and started wandering with sacks on their backs. While travelling around the world they put small stones into their sacks. A lot of years passed. The men decided to return to their wives and children. They were very happy to be again with their families. In the evening, when they opened their sacks, they found that their stones disappeared. One of them found beautiful flowers in his sack. They were Health, Love, Happiness and Friendship. He gave these flowers to his children and asked to guard them so that they should never leave their family. He told his children that those beautiful flowers were the values of life. Another man found spiders and snakеs in his sack. He had nothing to give his children. He collected greedy, thirst for money and envy.

T.: You see, all of us have different values of life. For some people values of life are everlasting, other people only at the end of their lives come to understand that they have lived in vain, that they have cared only for material things and have not about the eternal. And as a result they have nothing to give their children.

II. SPEAKING.

Working in groups students try to prove the importance of the main life values:

Health (students` thoughts)

Good health is a great blessing. Lack of health deprives our life of its vividness. "Good health is above wealth," says an English proverb. Even having money we cannot buy it.

It is common knowledge that health is extremely important for every person. Since ancient times the words "happy" and "healthy" have very often been used as synonyms . Rich people were ready to give  all their fortune for health.

Possessing good health is rather a precious thing but many factors can destroy it.

Really modern life exposes people to many stressors, including natural disasters, illnesses and noise. Every day people invent things which may be harmful to our health. Taking into consideration all these aspects we can say that health alone is a victory. I mean health not only physical but spiritual as well. I fully agree with a proverb " a sound mind is in a sound body."

So if we want to preserve our health we should be persistent, we should lead a healthy way of life.  We must remember that no one can do it for us. Only we can do it for ourselves and only then the Heavens will help us.

Happiness

I agree with the words of Dostoevsky "Happiness does not lie in happiness itself but in the achievement of it."

When one door of happiness closes, another opens but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which had been opened" Happiness depends upon ourselves.

Friendship

The richest people in the world are not those with the most money, but those with close friends.
Sincere friendship is truly a priceless gift.

1 am sure our deepest need is friendship. We all need it no matter how wealthy or successful we may be. I think we are incomplete without it. A book of Wisdom says: "Two are better than one; if one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up".

But if we want friends , we ourselves must be friendly. In fact, the only way to have a friend is to be one. Besides there are many principles of friendship, which we  must know in a good way. First of all it is openness. A friend is the one you can totally rely on. With a friend we can feel ourselves free and there is no need to pretend. We can share our deepest feelings, thoughts and we can always

expect understanding.

But we must remember that if someone shares his or her secrets with us we must be careful not to share them with someone else. It is very important to understand that "trust once broken is hard to restore".

One more vital characteristic of friendship is care. No friend­ship can be complete without it. It is always pleasant to have an approving look of a real friend an appreciative touch, or just being
together with a dear person.

To my mind the most important attribute of friendship is honesty. And if we want to develop friendship we are to be frank. In conclusion I want to say that friendship is a real treasure.

T: No doubt, that everything in our life begins with love.. You cannot be happy without love. Love makes our life complete and full of sense. Love makes friendship. You cannot love friends without loving people. To love means to give rather than to take. Love adds happiness and health. Good health is a great blessing. Lack of health deprives our life.

Love

I think that love is the highest value of life. We cannot be happy without love to our Motherland, parents, friends or without love to person. Love makes our life complete and

full of sense.

Of course love makes friendship, happiness. We cannot love friends without loving people. But to love means to give rather than to take.

To my mind love is a stream of living water, which we drink every day and need it always. At the same time it is the sun that gives people light along the river of life.

It is not easy to love. To love means to unite when the whole world splits into thousand parts. In love we give a hand to another, in love we change and make other people happy. In love all people are beautiful. 

Love is the beginning of everything. So it should be cared, cherished and grown carefully and with patience. Sometimes it needs even sacrifice.

T: So we have listened to a lot of ideas and thoughts and now I want you to answer my question:

What is more important and what is less?

We can not say what is more important, because all the values are correlated and are very connected with each other. But the most important thing for us is to find real values of life while being young and stick to them throughout our lives.

III. LISTENING

T: Sometimes it is difficult to express our feelings and emotions in words, it is quite easier to do it in songs and music. Today we'll listen to a song of a well-known and popular singer Gordon Sting.

Pre-listening:

1. Read a short text about Sting and be ready to answer the questions.

Gordon Sumner was born on 2 October 1951, Newcastle, England. He started his music career as a bass player and lead singer in "the Police". Sting's solo career began in 1982. His popularity and fame grew rapidly and steadily. Since 1994 Sting has been considered to be one of the finest quality songwriters to appear out of the second UK "new wave" boom (post-1977). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the film "My Funny Friend and Me."

His new Album, Brand New Day has received Grammy Awards for Best Pop Album and Best Pop male Vocal Performance. About his music he said: "I had to trust that the music would tell me stories, begin to create characters. Music is a little like sculpting a piece of wood - you begin to see faces in the wood."
