Procedure:
Greetings
Children make two circles, one inside the other. Moving around they greet each other and pay complements.
Warm up
Print phrases such as "in the library" "at an elegant dinner with the Royal Family" "in a noisy bar" "in a dangerous neighbourhood" on separate strips of paper and tape them to the underside of a few students' desks before they arrive. Write on the board an expression "Excuse me. Could I borrow a dollar?" Tell the students to look for an envelope under the desks. The ones who find envelopes must say the sentence on the board as if in the context written on the strip of paper.
Explain the new vocabulary: detached, semi-detached, terraced, bungalow, a block of flats. Conduct a phonetic drill with pupils.
On the board there are pictures of different houses. Give the children cards with the new vocabulary and have the students label them to the pictures.
Each student gets two pictures: one of their old house and one of their new house. The object of the game is for everyone to find the person now living in the house where they used to live. Students move around the class, asking others to describe their present houses: “What’s your house like?”; “ Has it got a …?”
Students are given a handout with pictures of five houses. On a cassette they hear short stories about five people living in a mud hut, a chalet, a block of flats, a farmhouse, a houseboat. They match the pictures and the numbers of the texts.
Filler
Students stand in a circle. A lively music is played and they pass around a hat with words in it. When the music stops, the student who is having the hat in the hands pulls out a card with a word (“bedroom’). Without telling this word he/she elicits the meaning of the word (“This is a place where we can sleep, do our lessons, have fun”)
Children sing and do actions.
Practice
Students have a virtual tour around KC’s flat. They see a living room, a main bedroom, a child’s bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. They hear the voice and practice the pronunciation of different words. Then they do different activities on the things they saw (matching, crosswords, typing words, filling, etc.)
Hand-on Activity
Let the students imagine that their class will soon be moving to a deserted island. They are allowed to take one thing from their room, something very useful and special to them. Give the students play dough and have them make this thing. While working with their hands children comment on what they are making using Present Progressive and Present Perfect Tenses.
Filler
Children watch the musical show on the video, sing the song “This Old Man” and dance hip-hop with the heroes of the show.
Grammar Training
Children watch a part of “Snow White” cartoon. After some time they are asked to split in two groups – watchers and writers. Writers sit down with their backs to the watchers who continue to watch the cartoon and make their commentaries on what Snow White and her forest friends doing (“Animals are cleaning the house. Racoons are washing clothes. Chipmunks are gathering cobwebs”, etc.) After two minutes they change their roles.
This is a follow-up activity. Divide the class in two teams. Draw a grid of nine squares on the board and write a number on each square (from 1 to 9). Prepare nine questions about Snow White and her helpers and set one question for each number. The groups call out the numbers and if they answer the question correctly, they get the point. The goal of the game is to make a line (either horizontal, vertical or diagonal).
