The subject: MODERN TECHNOLOGIES

Level: upper-intermediate

Aim: to help students realize the advantages and disadvantages of modern technologies, to encourage using technologies for studying through different activities.

Outcomes: by the end of the lesson, students will be able to develop their ideas about how modern technology and creativity can interact nowadays following the appropriate stages.

Materials: Power Point presentation, students’ projects, Viber chat, worksheets

 

The beginning of the lesson

  1. Greeting.
  2. Warming up.

Teacher: Today I’d like to start the lesson with the apple. (holding an apple in the hand) Look at it, think for a while and say what you associate the apple with.

The main part of the lesson

Teacher: Thanks a lot for your bright and various associations. But today we’re going to connect Apple with the sphere of technology, especially MODERN TECHNOLOGY which is chosen to be the subject of our lesson.

And now let us watch a video and try to guess what aspect of technology we’re going to concentrate on today.

Teacher: Well, really we try to prove that technology and creativity can interact. By the way during our work we’re going to follow the appropriate stages which are represented as icons on our special desktop.

Teacher: That’s why it’s high time to use our Apple phones, smart phones or tablets. Click on our Viber group and read my messages for you there. Then find two more students who received the same message. Join in the groups of three, discuss the key questions and be ready to answer them.

  1. Would you like technology to keep developing or stop developing? What would be the consequences of each of these trends?
  2. Why are some people afraid of technological progress?
  3. Do you think the robot would have a life similar to yours? Why? Why not?

Thanks for your brilliant creative ideas. I’m sure they will definitely help in our educational process.

Teacher: Taking about modern technology and people’s attitude to it, we can’t but mention that some people (especially older generation) are technophobes while others (mostly the youngsters) can be technology addicted.

Watch an interview from our iTool and answer the questions about people from the video. ( Look through the questions before watching. )

Teacher: What about you? Do you consider yourself to be a technophobe or a technology addict?

As I see you aren’t technophobes but some students are really technogeeks. So is there a piece of technology you couldn’t live without? Why?

Teacher: Without any doubt we can’t imagine contemporary world without modern technological items. Tell how you usually use them in your everyday life using the vocabulary on the screen.

 

Teacher: I know for sure you’re often helpful when your parents, grandparents or even teachers ask you to help them cope with technical devices.

As I’ve already mentioned I’m quite good at making Power Point presentation, but sometimes I also need your help. And now give me some instructions in such common situations. (Use WB p.39 ex.2 Solution upper-intermediate or your own ideas.)

 

  • Find and open a document on your computer.
  • Reformat text in a document.
  • Get in touch with the people who run a website.
  • Find and watch a video
  • Stream a song to your computer.
  • Find a friend’s contact details on your smartphone.
  • Locate a friend’s address on an online map.
  • Log on to a social-networking site.

Teacher: At the previous lesson you also were given some instructions concerning the text “STARS OF THE VLOGOSPHERE” which you had to read at home. Before discussing it let us remind what it is about.

  • Who are vloggers?

Teacher: Let us check up how well you’ve understood the content of the text. At first try to give definitions to the highlighted nouns in the text.

STARS OF THE VLOGOSPHERE

 

Teacher: Speaking about vlogging I often look through some vlogs or blogs in order to find something unusual, creative or just entertaining. So while getting ready for this lesson I came across an interesting video on You Tube connected with a magic mirror which we have already read about. And now I advise you to organize a piece of your creative work.

Work in your groups. Be ready to do a special task.

Group 1. You are Inventors. You have to present this piece of technology stressing on its advantages.

Group 2. You are Journalists. You will ask some questions about the details of their inventions. (Your questions may me provocative)

Group 3. You are Experts. You will analyze the pros and cons of the presented technology and give your resolution.

 

Thank you for such an accomplished work. You are very creative and talented.

Teacher: As you see modern technologies can be not only useful and demanding, they can also help develop our creative ideas. Now let us see in what way it is done in our students’ special projects. Thus, our next step is createology.

Teacher: Summarising, I’d like to quote Albert Einstein who once said, “CREATIVITY IS CONTAGIOUS, PASS IT ON.”
