Мета позакласного заходу (уроку) - ознайомити учнів з англійськими прислів'ями, які відображають історію, традиції, звичаї, розум і гумор народу. Знання прислів'їв збагачує словарний запас учнів, розвиває пам'ять і логіку. Вправи дають можливість удосконалити навички усного мовлення, стимулюють пізнавальну діяльність учнів.

                                                       English Through Proverbs

                                                                  (позакласний захід)

  Мета заходу: розвивати в учнів вміння розуміти значення англійських прислів’їв, вміти їх влучно і доречно використовувати в усному мовленні; сприяти розширенню загального розвитку та логічного мислення;  формувати пізнавальні інтереси учнів.

 

 T: We know that some ideas and thoughts of people are reflected in proverbs.There are hundreds of proverbs which were created, developed and accomplished for many centuries. At our lesson you’ll learn some proverbs and try to use them in different situations.

    a) Give your opinions. What is a proverb?

         P1: Proverbs are short sentences with particular meaning.

         P2: Proverbs have some moral.

         P3: Proverbs are wise.

        P4: They are rules that are worth following.

T: Definition of the word "proverb" from the dictionary:

                     Proverb is a popular short saying, with words of advice or warning.

    b) T: Why do we use them?.

        P1: Proverbs teach us to live.

        P2: Proverbs help us to avoid mistakes.

        P3: They make our speech richer.

        P4: They are funny.

        P5: They show people's wisdom.

        P6: They contain experience of generations.

        P7: The history and people’s views, their traditions, customs and humour are reflected in proverbs.

 

 T: It’s time to start.

І. Read the dialogues. Use the following proverbs instead of the italicized words.

 

1. It never rains but it pours.        Прийшла біда - відчиняй ворота.                                                    

2. Business before pleasure.        Скінчив справу – гуляй сміливо.

3. Never say die.                          Ніколи не слід падати духом.

4.Tastes differ.                              Про смаки не сперечаються.

    “Why are you crying, Lena? What has happened?”

    “I can’t do the exercise the teacher gave me.”

    “ Don’t cry! Let me help you”.

    “How do you like this red dress?”

     “Well, you see, Nina, the material is good and the colour is nice but I don’t like the  

     style. I like that green one better.”

      “It’s got too many buttons. I don’t like so many buttons on a dress.”

      “ Well, do as you like. Buy the red one, then. No two people think the same way

      “Have you practised the piano, son?”

      “Not yet.”

      “Then you can’t go to the cinema.”

      “But Mother─”

      “When you’ve practised you may go.”

      “Why aren’t you at school? What’s the matter with you, Kate? What happened to your

       arm?”

      “Oh, I’ve broken it, and now I’ve caught cold besides.”

      “You don’t say so! Troubles never come alone.”

 

II. Say which of the proverbs following the story makes the best ending to it.

   

                                      The Devoted Friend.

 

     “Oh,   I know of nothing in the world”, said the Water-rat, “that is either better or higher    

       than a devoted friendship.”

      “And what is your idea of the duties of a devoted friend?” asked a green little bird who

        was sitting on a tree and had heard the conversation.

           “Yes, that is just what I want to know,” said the Duck and swam away.

            “What a silly question!” cried the Water-rat. “My devoted friend must be devoted

        to me, of course.”

            “And what will you do in return?” said the little bird.

            “I don’t understand you,” answered the Water-rat.

 

          1. To run with the hair and hunt with the hounds. (Служити і нашим і вашим.)

          2. A friend in need is a friend indeed. (Друг пізнається в біді)

          3. Nothing venture, nothing have. (Ризик – благородна справа)

          4. Actions speak louder than words.( Вчинки говорять голосніше, ніж слова)

 

ІІІ. Here are some ideas of friendship as expressed by characters in Oscar Wilde’s story “The Devoted Friend’. Explain who is right and give your opinion of a devoted friendship. Make use of a proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed’.

    

  1. The rich Milller who always asked the Little Hans to help him said, “When people are in trouble they must be left alone. That is my idea of friendship and I am sure I’m right.”

 

  1. “ But could we not ask Little Hans here?” said the Miller’s youngest son. “If poor Hans is in trouble I will give him my porridge and show him my white rabbits”.

 

IV. Comment on the girl’s behaviour.

 

       When Carol’s family moved to New York, Carol did’t like the city the first minute she 

       saw it. But her brother Johnny and her sister Jinny liked everything there. Carol left

       her friends in the small town and she did not want to have new friends in New York.

       Her brother and sister made friends with the girls and boys in the house and were very

       happy. “Tastes differ”, said Carol to her brother and sister.

 

V. Watch, listen and remember. Name and explain some of the proverbs from the video.

 VI. Read the proverbs in the following rebuses.

T: At the end of our lesson listen to my advice. Complete each of them with one of the proverbs.

 

  1. Live and learn. (Вік живи – вік учись)
  2. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today. (Не відкладай на завтра те, що ти можеш зробити сьогодні)
  3. While there is life, there is hope. (Доки живу, сподіваюсь.)
  4. Deeds, not words. (Вчинки говорять голосніше, ніж слова.)
  5. Every dog has his day. ( Буде й на нашому тижні свято.)

 

Do the necessary things at once.

Don’t be sad for long if you are out of luck.

Don’t talk much but act.

Don’t worry if you think you know little about some things.

Never loose hope.
