Topic of the lesson. The Most Popular Cartoons and Their Characters
Aims of the lesson: to enable pupils
- to activate the lexics to describe the appearance and judge about personality;
- to differentiate the questions “What is he/she like?” and “What does he/she look like?”
- to implement the usage of the topic-related lexics according to the speech patterns;
- to practice grammar (Present Continuous);
- to read for gist and listen for the specific information;
- to practise pair and group work;
- to bring up students to be friendly and kind.
Outcomes:
By the end of the lesson students will be able to ask and answer about appearance and character traits, to complete the speech patterns with appropriate words; to use Present Continuous in negatives by talking about activities;
Materials and equipment: pictures of cartoon characters, pictures for presentation of the new words, a tape-recorder, handouts, multimedia equipment, pictures to disagree, grammar basic structure (is/are + not + V-ing), CD Magic English #5.
Procedure
T: Good morning, pupils! Before we start the lesson let’s greet our guests.
Ps: Good morning, teachers!
T: We’re having an unusual lesson today. We’re going to get acquainted with a lot of cartoon characters, describe their appearance and character traits, do many interesting tasks, work in pairs and groups.
II/ Phonetic drill.
T: and now let’s train our tongue. Look at the screen and repeat each line of the poem.
“Tom is playing,
Fred is eating,
Nick is writing,
Bob is sleeping.
The sun is shining,
And I am smiling.”
III. Warming-up.
T: I know you bring the pictures of your favourite cartoon character today. Show them to each other. Now look at the parts of my pictures and try to guess cartoon characters. Start like these: I think… I’m sure… It seems… I guess…
P1: I think it is Simba.
P2: It seems to me it is a dwarf.
P3: I guess it is a mermaid.
T: Let’s play the game “Snowball”. Say one after another the character traits you have learnt. Repeat the word(s) of the previous pupil(s) (the game is supported with flash cards).

T: Well done! Now present your pictures. What is your favourite cartoon?
P1: My favourite cartoon is “Bembi”. Look, this is Bembi.
T: Very beautiful.

T: Funny, yes?
P3: My favourite cartoon is “Winnie-the-Pooh and His friends”. Look, this is Tiger.
T: Very nice.
P4: My favourite cartoon is “Beauty and the Beast”. Look, this is Bell. …
3.Speaking. Pair work.
T: Thanks a lot. I am very interested in what your favorite character is like. Ask and answer the question “What is he/ she like?” (blackboard)

T: I see you are a little tired. Let’s sing the song “Friends” (Magic English #5).

T: Fantastic! But let’s learn some more words to talk about your favorite characters. Look at the screen, listen and repeat.

T: Look at the pictures of animals and repeat the words in pairs after the teacher.

Group 1 – the task is to choose the sentences to talk about his appearance.
Group 2 – the task is to choose the sentences to talk about his character traits.
P1: Pinocchio is tall and thin. He has got short hair. His nose is long. He has got big blue eyes.
P2: Pinocchio is not very clever. He is kind. He is friendly.
11. Grammar and Speaking
T: Excellent! Now it is time to speak what your favorite characters are doing in their cartoons.

T: Winnie-the-pooh and his friends are running.
P1: No, they are not running. They are eating now.
T: Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends are jumping now.
P2: No, they are not jumping. They are playing chess now.
T: The tiger is sitting now.

b) Let’s watch the episode from “Snow White and Seven Dwarfs”. Pay attention what Snow White and her friends are doing.
T: Look at the pictures, disagree with the sentences and correct them. Say according to the example: Snow White is playing the piano.
She is not playing the piano. She is dancing.
T: Our lesson is coming to the end. Remember! We all are different, but you should be kind friendly, joyful as your favourite characters are.
You all worked hard, were great, attentive and active. Everyone in his own way was the best today.
