The Constitution of the USA

The Constitution of the United States is the world’s oldest written constitution in force. It was signed on September 17, 1787 by the Constitutional Convention. The Constitution of the United States consists of a preamble, seven articles and the 27 amendments. The first 10 amendments are called «The Bill of Rights». Added in 1791, they provide the freedom of religion, speech, and the press, the right of peaceful

assembly, and the right to be safe in one’s own home.

The Constitution divides the power of government into three independent branches – the executive, the legislative and the judicial, each one has the power over the others (Checks and Balances). The ultimate power under the Constitution is not given to the President (the executive branch), or to the Supreme Court (the judicial branch). It belongs to «We the People», in fact and in spirit.

THE USA CONSTITUTION

Номер слайду 3

If you know how the USA Constitution began you will be able to find a common language with any American. All of them are very proud of their Constitution.

Номер слайду 4

The USA Constitution was written by 55 men who met at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787.

Номер слайду 5

There were no women among the delegates. There were no native Americans. Black people, slaves and poor farmers were not present either.

Номер слайду 6

By May 25, 1787, the delegates from over half of the states had arrived in Philadelphia.

Номер слайду 7

In 4 months the delegates wrote the Constitution which has lasted over 200 years!

Номер слайду 8

The delegates decided that what they said at the Convention would remain a secret for 30 years. They were afraid that the people might not accept the Constitution if they knew all the disagreements the Framers had.

Номер слайду 9

The most important delegates to the Convention were George Washington, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin. They were all for a strong national government.

Номер слайду 10

Benjamin Franklin attended the Convention as a delegate from Pennsylvania. He was highly respected by the Americans.

Номер слайду 11

James Madison is known as the “Father of the Constitution”. Much of what we know about the Philadelphia Convention is based on his notes.

Номер слайду 12

George Washington was chosen as the president of the Convention. He was known as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces during the Revolution.

Номер слайду 13

During the long debates, the Framers couldn’t reach a decision. A special committee of one delegate from each state was formed to find a solution. The result of their work is known as the Great Compromise.

Номер слайду 14

The main idea of this compromise was that Congress would have two parts or houses. These houses would be the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Номер слайду 15

CHECK YOUR MEMORY. Match two parts of the sentences: George Washington Each state, large or small What they said at the Convention The result of the committee’s work There were no women James Madison The USA Constitution The Framers wanted the new constitution is known as the Great Compromise. was written by 55 men in 1787. was the president of the convention. to be accepted by the people. is called the “Father of the Constitution”. would have one vote at the convention. among the delegates. would remain a secret for 30 years.
