PROCEDURE OF THE LESSON
Teacher: I want to start our today’s lesson with some quiz. Look at this spidergram. There isn't the main word in the circle. Your task is to guess the word, using the given words. It will be the topic of our lesson. (Advertising). Then add more words.
Ad
Advert
Advertisement
Advertising
Commercial
1. How many advertisements do you think you see in a day?
2. Where do you see advertisements? (Think of as many places as possible.)
3. What makes an advertisement remain in your memory? ( images? words? music?
phrases?)
4. What does it mean to be a conscious consumer?
5. Do advertisers have a responsibility to society? Why? Why not?
To star with I’d like students to read the ad and for questions 1-4, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits best according to the text.
Key
1 A: Incorrect: there is no any extra information about the car, the characteristic is not detailed enough to be introduced in a leaflet.
B: Correct: the text is short and describes the advantages of the car so that customers want to buy it.
C: Incorrect: there is no technical description of the parts of the car as well as no instructions how to repair it.
D: Incorrect: labels of the producer are presented; there are no warts mentioned as it is usual in the article.
2 A: Correct: an engine is a part of the car that produces power; the car’s power and the power of knowledge are put together to make an artistic effect.
B: Incorrect: in the first sentence, ‘designed’ means ‘created’, not ‘has specific external features’.
C: Incorrect: low carbon dioxide emissions are one of the characteristics of 2-litre engine.
D: Incorrect: we don’t know if the website shown on the top of the photo is useful.
3 A: Incorrect: power can’t be delivered more or less intensively – it is either delivered or not.
B: Correct: the main advantage of the car – fuel-saving and ecologically safe engine – is a result of technological advance.
C: Incorrect: if power is not delivered accurately, the mechanism does not work.
D: Incorrect: in the car, power is delivered by the engine – industry as a social phenomenon does not make it being delivered; the adverb ‘industrially’ does not have the degrees of comparison.
4 A: Incorrect: there can be the Nobel Prize winners among the experts, but it is not mentioned in the ad.
B: Incorrect: the word ‘experts’ underlines that the members of the panel are professionals, not amateurs.
C: Correct: ‘expertise’ and ‘experts’ have the same roots, it can prompt to choose the correct answer.
D: Incorrect: usually, no cars are pioneered in TV-shows, they are only modified and improved.
Listening
After reading. Students are going to listen to the audio. Then they have a task to complete the text about advertising with not mentioned information in the gaps. After that they replay answers to the class and check them in order to practice their skills in listening and reading improving their speaking skills. (SB ex. 3 p.35)
Writing
Secondly, for writing students are going to make up the dialogue about advertising they liked the most. They’ll get handouts in which are useful phrases, sentence starters. It will help students to work out better.
Use sentence starters to express your opinions about advertising:
I am convinced that…
The ones that annoy me most are…
As for me, the best adverts are those…
The adverts I like most are…
I can’t stand ads that are…
Whenever I buy something, I always…
To make a conclusion…
To sum up…
Finally,…
Watching and listening
You are about to see the video “Advertising in our life”. As you watch it you are to give answers to the questions about given video.
Task 1
Which advert was the most effective in your opinion?
What was it about the advert that made it effective?
What is the recipe of successful advertising?
What style (humorous, innovative…) of advert do you prefer? Why?
Does advertising effect on us?
Task 2
Now let’s improve your imaginative talents! Please unite in groups of four and try to create and act out your own advertisement. You’ll have 5 minutes for that.
Is it funny and interesting to make an advertisement?
Is the advertisement important for our life? Why?
Do you believe the advertisement you see? Why?
Can an advertisement make you buy something? Why?
For the next time homework is to write a letter of complaint about product you’ve bought.
