Topic: Introduction to the story and characters of Matilda.

Lesson Objectives:

• Ознайомити учнів з основними героями та сюжетом книги Matilda
• Розвивати навички читання з розумінням
• Розширити словниковий запас (характеристики людей, почуття, дії)
• Практикувати усне мовлення через обговорення.

Materials:

• Витяг з першого розділу Matilda (адаптований текст – 1–2 абзаци)
• Список ключових слів (vocabulary list)
• Картки з персонажами
• Відеофрагмент з екранізації (опційно – 2 хвилини)
• Робочі листи (worksheet)

1. Warm-up / Lead-in (5–10 хв)

T:Show a picture of Matilda and ask:

“Do you like reading books?”

“What kind of books do you like?”

“Do you know this girl? Who is she?”

 Introduce Roald Dahl briefly.

2. Vocabulary Introduction (10 хв)

T:Present key words (with pictures or translation if needed):

clever, naughty, kind, strict, magic, read, books, school, parents, teacher

Do matching or “guess the word” activity.

 Match the word to its meaning.

3.Grammar Focus.

Past Simple and  Adjectives (kind, clever, etc.)

4. Reading Activity (15 хв)

Task: Read a short adapted extract from Chapter 1 (Matilda and her family)

Comprehension questions:

Is Matilda’s family kind?

What does Matilda love?

How do her parents treat her?

5. Speaking / Group Work (10 хв)

Task:

In pairs or small groups:

Describe Matilda and her parents using the vocabulary

"Matilda is… / Her parents are… / She likes…"

Roleplay: one student is Matilda, the other is her friend.

5. Summarising.(5–10 хв)

T:Ask students:

“Do you like Matilda?”

“What would you do if you had powers like her?”

Homework:

1. Write a short paragraph (4–5 sentences) describing Matilda or another character.
