When your parents tell you: to clean up the room, to behave, to do your homework, etc. they use the Infinitive. Now you are going to find out more bout it. Listen to rules and make notes.

The Infinitive is a non-finite form of the verb which consists of the base verb form and the particle “to”.

e.g.: to do, to go, to work, to talk, to find.

The infinitive names an action (to drive a car) or a state ( to be ill), but cant show a person, number, mood.

The infinitive has such active and passive forms:

  1. simple – I asked him to write a report.
  2. continuous – He is supposed to be writing a report now.
  3. perfect – He appears to have already written the report.
  4. perfect continuous – He seems to have been writing the report for already two hours.
  5. simple passive – I expect this report to be written tomorrow.
  6. perfect passive – I expect the report to have been written by now.

All the forms of the infinitive are used with modal verbs to create certain meanings:

  1. He can write reports.
  2. I should have written the report yesterday.
  3. This report must have been written by one of our workers.

6. Reading

Find the infinitive and distinguish it’s form:

- They wanted me to sign the document. (simple)

- She is thought to be singing at the concert. (continuous)

- We need this work to be done by Friday. (simple passive)

 - He supposed this project to have been realized by this time. (perfect passive)

- They seem to have been partying all night long. (perfect continuous)

- We appear to have lost our way. (perfect)
