Our Hobbies and Interests. Leisure Time  ( the 5th form)



  • to motivate students to the learning activity; to enlarge student’s vocabulary; to improve students’ reading and speaking skills;
  • to develop students’ communicative skills; to promote thinking and creative imagination; to encourage cultural understanding and tolerance;
  • to promote positive attitude to studying language; to develop self-esteem and mutual-esteem, and sense of respect for others.

Outcomes: by the end of the lesson students will be able:

  • to express their personal attitude on the topic;
  • to ask and answer the questions in a role-play;
  • to compare their results with other students’ answers;
  • to use correct grammatical items.

                                         P R O C E D U R E




        Good morning, dear pupils!

How are you today?

I’m glad to see you.

I hope you are fine and ready to work hard at our lesson.

Now look at the blackboard. You can see a poster with a route of our today’s trip.

We’ll have a long trip from the foot of mountains to its top.

You’ll have to overcome a lot of obstacles. Let’s start our journey.


But, first of all repeat after me:

I am a pupil.

I am a good pupil.

I am a clever pupil.

I am a talented pupil.

I am an excellent pupil.

 I am a fantastic pupil.

I am trying to be the best pupil in the world.


Look at the blackboard, you can see some scrambled words.

Try to read them.

So, today at the lesson we are going to revise the material concerning hobbies and interests. We shall read texts, make dialogues, do some exercises, speak about our celebrities and check your project work.

Warming up.

 1.Answer my questions.

 1.  What is hobby?

      2.  What hobby groups do you know?

    (doing things,  making things,  collecting things, learning things)

     3. What hobbies have the most educational value?

4. Do you go in for sports? Which sports do you go in for?

  1. What style of music do you like?


2.Match the parts of the sentences.


1. Different people like                       a) is watching football games.

2. A hobby is something you              b) fond of travelling or gardening.

3. Some people are                              c) doing different things.

4. My Dad’s hobby                              d) reading poems.

5. My mother enjoys                            e)  like to do in your free time.

3.Method “Microphone”.

Now it will be the most interesting obstacle you have.

Say what hobby you have. And why do you like it?


4.Vocabulary Practice. Group work

Tastes really differ…

           Different people spend their free time differently. Let’s see what the most popular pastime activities are.


Group  1.  Match the words and make up word combinations.


(Going out, playing computer games, eating ice-cream, riding a bike,

collecting stamps, watching TV, listening to music, doing sports,

reading books, keeping pets)


         Group  2. Make up sentences with these words.


  1. My friend’ hobby is solving puzzles.
  2. Does he like playing tennis? No, he  likes watching TV.
  3. She is interested in geography.
  4. My sister collects dolls.
  5. Some people are fond of sports.


5.Physical exercises

Let’s do our morning exercises.

1,2 – 1,2,3 – I like boxing. Look at me!

1,2 – 1,2,3 – I enjoy watching TV.

1,2 – 1,2,3 – I like dancing. Look at me!

1,2 – 1,2,3 – I like swimming in the sea.



They say that the busiest men find the most leisure.

Look at the screen. You can see a man there. He is very famous.              

Do you know him?  Who is he?

Yes,  he is Bill Gates.

  • What is he?
  • He is a computer wizard.

Would you like to know about his favorite pastime activities?


Group 1. Read the text and write out all  activities.


Group 2. Read the text and write out all word combinations which mean  “захоплюється».

What hobbies do they have?



  1. Listening  and Speaking


Look at our screen. There are some questions, read them and then you’ll pay attention to them when you listen to the dialogue.


Who hasn’t got any leisure time?       ( a boy)

What does a boy say about his hobby? (Being idle is his hobby)

What did the boy collect once?          (coins)

Why did he give up his hobby?            (His studies takes up his time)

What does he do when he has spare time? (He reads books, watches TV)

What hobby does the girl have?  (She has only one hobby –photography.)



8.Make up  the dialogue and read or act it.


- What sports do you play?
- I like figure skating.
- Do you know how to skate?
- A little bit.
- I skate too.
- Maybe we’ll skate together on Sunday?
- Yes, good idea.



- What do you like to do?
- I like to sing and dance.
- Where do you dance?
- I dance at a club.
-  Can you play piano?
- Yes, I play piano and guitar.

10.Project Work


Well, pastime activities of young people are various.

Last week you  made a hobby survey at our school.

Everybody took part in that projects.

You worked in small groups.

Now we can see the final result of your  collective work.


Please, introduce  your report about the project.

       Imagine you are at the Black Sea now. It is summer. The weather is wonderful. The sky is blue. The sun is shining. A light wind is blowing from the sea. The water in the sea is warm and pleasant. You are lying on the beach and enjoying all these wonderful things. You are quiet. You have no problems. You like your family, your friends, your school, your teachers and they love you too. You are happy.   Please, breathe in. Breathe out.       

Open your eyes now. How are you?

  1. Summary


       Today we have spoken about different hobbies. I liked your answers, your stories and dialogues, the way you have worked.
