                                               Procedure

I. Introduction

T: Good morning, everyone! You’re welcome to our English class today. I’m really happy to see you all here, and I can only hope that you’re ready for the lesson, aren’t you?

Ss: Of course, we are.

T: So, it’s a special day today, because this English class is quite unusual and non-standard. As you’ve probably guessed, today we’re going to speak about some most prominent women not only is the life and history of our country, but of the whole world. So, the topic of our today’s lesson is “The Most Prominent Women in the History of Humanity”. It seems to me, that it’s a very interesting and many-sided theme. Our today’s English class is a kind of a summing-up one, and the topic under discussion is worthy of everybody’s attention.

Since the time immemorial women have always played a great role in the development of human civilization and in the World History. It’s common knowledge that history is not done by itself. I’m sure, you’ll agree with me that only people do it. All of you, of course, know that history can give us a lot of examples of a woman’s influence on both History and Politics.

II. Warming-up

T: First, as usual, our most favourite motto and it is as follows (Ss – in chorus)

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.

Life is a beauty, admire it.

Life is a bliss, taste it.

Life is a dream, realize it.

Life is a challenge, meet it.

Life is a duty, complete it.

Life is a game, play it.

Life is costly, care of it.

Life is wealth, keep it.

Life is love, enjoy it.

Life is mystery, know it.

Life is a promise, fulfill it

Life is a sorrow, overcome it.

Life is a struggle, accept it.

Life is a song, sing it.

Life is a tragedy, confront it.

Life is an adventure, dare it.

Life is luck, make it.

Life is too precious, do not destroy it.

Life is life, fight for it.”

(Mother Teresa’s Message)

T: I hope you do remember whose message it is. (Ss – in chorus): Mother Teresa’s.

T: I don’t doubt that our cooperation will be fruitful today, and I want you to be attentive and active. Don’t be afraid to express your opinion and to speak English fluently and to the point. So, let’s start.

T: I wonder if you have ever heard such a term “a phenomenal woman”. Do you think a phenomenal woman really exists? What kind of a woman can be called phenomenal? Give your ideas. (Students express their points of view in “a chain”)

Suggested answers:

S1: To my mind, a phenomenal woman is a female who knows herself well. The phenomenal woman is honest and the one who could even be proud enough to show the world who she really is.

S2: As for me, I think that a phenomenal woman is self-confident, honest, sincere, mysterious, and silent at times.

S3: In my opinion, a phenomenal woman is practical, sympathetic, charming, always willing to make sacrifices for her children, relatives and for her country, pure in mind and in heart, but, unfortunately , under certain circumstances, she may met have a mind of her own.

S4: I’m sure that a phenomenal woman is brave and wise enough to cope with all the hardships on her way.

S5: I agree with all of you here. Unfortunately, the surrounding world is rather cruel and it has imposed on women too much, especially at present.

T: I absolutely agree with each of you. You’ve probably heard that very often men say that the place of any woman is in the kitchen. Do you share their point of view?

Suggested answers:

S6: I disagree entirely because we know a lot of examples that a woman can really be great in politics, science, art and what not.

S7: That’s just it! No doubt, a woman is a homemaker and more often than not almost all women have got more patience and responsibility to make the impossible possible.

S8: Of course, one of the main functions of a woman is to be a mother, but she can’t only do household chores, but she can also try her best to make a career and in the long run she achieves success.

S9: Moreover, a woman can do anything, and everybody knows about numerous achievements made by women in different spheres of our life. We can only be proud of them.

S10: Yes, indeed! A lot of women have already distinguished themselves in the scientific field, in art, in sports, in politics, etc.

S11: You are right! And, personally, I’m sure that women can often act in many situations much wiser than men. And what’s more, without women world wouldn’t exist at all.

T: Thank you very much for your interesting ideas. And now I wonder if you knew any proverbs or sayings or quotations about women.

Ss: Of course, we know a lot of them.

Suggested answers:

S1: A woman and a glass are always in danger.

S2: A woman and a melon are hard to choose.

S3: Woman’s tongue is her sword, and she doesn’t let it trust.

S4: A woman has nine lives like a cat.

S5: A woman keeps a secret only what she does not know.

S6: “Women… inspire us with the desire to do masterpieces, and always pretend us from carrying them act”(O. Wilde)

S7: “A woman will always sacrifice herself if you give her the opportunity”.(W. S. Maugham)

S8: Well, the list of such proverbs, sayings and quotations can be very long, indeed. But at present we’d only like to stress here that a woman can really be great in all spheres, and she is almost always unsurpassed.

T: As for me, I can only support you, and I’m very pleased to have such intelligent and smart students.

III. The Main Part

Reading Comprehension

T: Now it’s high time we had some informative reading on the topic under discussion (the text given to the students)

“People and History”

History is not done by itself. People do it. Some of them are more active, others are less. The most active people, men and women, can influence both history and politics. People whose activity is in politics are called politicians.

The problem of a person’s influence on history and the policy purposed by this or that country has always been very complicated. Life is changeable and often unpredictable. Even a small event, considered unimportant before, can influence history and the policy in general.

History gives us many examples of a person’s influence on the country’s and the world’s policy. One of the most unusual of them is connected with the name of Nastia Lissovska(1505-1561) more known as Roksolana. In 1520 during the Tatars attack on the town of Rohatyn, fifteen-year-old Nastia was caught and cought to Turkey and sold to the Sultan’s harem.

The girl was beautiful, intelligent and had a musical talent. Having a primary education, she learnt Arab and other languages quickly. A year later she became a wife of Sultan Suleyman I. During 40 years, she influenced the policy and life of not only the Osman Empire but of Europe and even of the whole world.

                      Some comprehension questions:

1. Is history done by itself? Why? Why not? Prove it.

2. What can you say about the problem of a person’s influence on history and the political life?

3. History gives us a lot of examples of a person’s influence on the political life, doesn’t it? Prove it.

4. Many people believe that a personal image plays a great role in pursuing this or that policy. Do you agree or disagree? Why? (Student’s answers)

T: Good for you! I’ve just heard your points of view and I can say that you’re good at History. Well done!

Speaking Practice

T: Now I’d like you to give us a portrait of a prominent woman as you personally see it. You’re to tell us about her image, character, education, and activities. Look at these portraits(video).

May be they’ll help you in your descriptions. As you remember, it was one of your home assignments for today. You were to do some research on the topic and then give talks. It was a kind of teamwork. (There were 4 teams) So, you are welcome.

  Team I

S1: We’d like to tell you about Cleopatra (a video portrait). She was an extraordinary woman. She was born in the year 69 before our era. She was the last tsarina of Old Egypt. There had been six wives of tsars before her with the same name. But the most famous, of course, was Cleopatra VII. Her life was very dramatic. She was very intelligent and ambitious. She fought for a power with her husband. Cleopatra wanted not only to be a wife but to rule, and it was the main reason why she was expatriated from Egypt.

S2: But soon she met Julius Caesar. He fell in love with her and loved that beautiful and well-educated woman dearly, admired her greatly. With the help of Caesar’s soldiers she returned to her own country and became the first and the only tsarina of Egypt. After the murder of Caesar, Mark Anthony and Cleopatra became close friends. He was the Roman commander, very brave and wise.

S3: At that time he ruled in the eastern regions of the Roman Empire. He loved Cleopatra very much. He presented her and her children with huge estates. That’s why the Roman Senate declared war on Cleopatra. As we’ve found out, Mark Anthony was the chief of the army of Egypt at that time. But, unfortunately, the army was defeated by the Roman legions. That legendary general didn’t survive disgrace and committed suicide. As for Cleopatra, she allowed a make to bite her. At that time the Egyptians believed that it was a symbol of immortality.

Ss4-6: Now our team would like to check how smart and erudite you are. So, answer our questions very quickly. (Addressing other teams):

1. Who wrote the book “Cleopatra”? (Henry R. Haggard)

2. Who played the role of Cleopatra in the American film of the same name? (Elizabeth Taylor)

3. Who played the role of Mark Anthony in that film? (Richard Barton)

4. What interesting facts from the life of these stars do you know?

5. Who was the film director? (Joseph Mankovich)

And now Team II – it’s your turn.

S1: We'd like to tell you about Joan of Arc (1412-1431). She is a national heroine of France. She was the leader of the national liberation movement of the French people against England during the Centenary War. Joan was born in 1412 in a poor peasant family. But the French historians say that the girl was very passionate and sensitive by her nature. It's known that her family suffered acutely from the Englishmen, and Joan decided to liberate France from the enemies. During the private audience with the heir of the French Crown, she convinced him to begin the war against England.

Ss2-3: Furthermore, Joan was at the head of the army and went to beleaguered Orlean. Her energy and firm belief in victory helped the defenders to raise the siege. That's why she was named the Orlean Virgin. Under the command of Joan the French defenders won a victory over the English troops. More than that, she enjoyed wide popularity among the poor people. But the King and aristocracy were afraid of it.

Ss4-5: Later Joan was removed from the military operations and became a soldier. But during their sortie Joan of Arc was taken prisoner and handed over to the Courts. They declared her a heretic and a witch. She was condemned to death. Just imagine: she was only 19 then.

More than 500 years has passed since that time. But her name is still popular today. In fact, Joan of Arc is a personification of courage, heroism and selfless service to Motherland.

S6: And now it's our turn to check your erudition. (The members of team I are addressing all the other students with their questions.)

1. Who played the role of Joan of Arc in the film about her? (Inna Tchurikova and Milla Jovovich)

2. Which modern film directors made films about Joan of Arc? (the Frenchman L. Besson)

3. What other films did Milla Jovovich star in? (" The Fifth Element")

4. Who was the film director of that film? (Luc Besson, too)

T: Now it's high time Team III gave us their presentation ( video-presentation and some comments)

Team III

Ss1-2: Our presentation is devoted to Princess Olga. Without any doubt, there’ve been a lot of well-known woman's names in the history of our Motherland. One of them is Princess Olga. In fact, she was the first woman who understood the importance and the greatness of Christianity in pagan Kyiv Rus.

Olga was the wife of Prince Igor, who ruled in 912- 945. The history of their meeting and love was very romantic. Once young Prince was hunting in the forest and saw a young beautiful girl. He fell in love with her at first sight and proposed marriage to her, and Olga became Kyiv Princess.

Soon after that they had a son, Svyatoslav by name Olga loved her husband very much, but, unfortunately they couldn't spend much time together. Prince Igor who was a courageous warrior spent most of his time in marches and wars.

Ss3-4: As we've found out, he was killed by the tribe of Dervlians while gathering toll from them. Olga was distraught with grief and waved vengeance. She burnt the main town of the enemies, Iskorosten, and many people were taken in servitude by her.

At that time Prince Svyatoslav was too young to rule the country, and princess Olga ruled the country herself. During her reign Kyiv Rus became much stronger than before. Princess Olga proved that a weak woman could complete with a strong man and very successfully, indeed.

Ss5-6: We can't help mentioning here that Princess Olga was names the wisest among the women of her time. She was the first woman in Kyiv Rus who accepted Christianity. She was baptized in 955, and as a Christian she did much to her country. She was greatly disappointed with her only son who didn't become a Christian thought she had taught him. Svyatoslav was a warrior just like his father. But he was very tolerant with Christians.

We can't but stress here that the Eastern Orthodox faith was introduced in Kiev Rus by Olga's grandson Prince Volodymyr the Great, and the first ceremony of baptism took place in 988. That event was of great importance in the history of our country.

Kyiv Rus was becoming stronger and stronger. Thus, Princess Olga was a prominent woman for all times. She was justly called "Dawn before sunrise", "The Bright Son" was her grandson, prince Volodymyr.

Our team has prepared a set of questions to all of you:

1. How can you describe Olga?

2. Did she know a new foreign languages?

3. Who baptized Olga?

4. Where was prince Igor killed?( near the river Prypiat)

5. Who killed prince Igor?(the Derevliany/Drevlyane)

6. What interesting facts from Olga's life do you know?

7. Have you read any legends or myths about Princess Olga?

T: You've done a great job! Thanks a lot. But we've got one more team and their video-presentation. So, Team IV - you're welcome!

Team IV

Ss1-2: Our presentation( video) is devoted to Mary, Queen of Scots. Your destiny was as difficult and tragic as the destinies of Cleopatra and Joan of Arc. We've just heard about them.

Mary, Stuart Queen of Scots was born in Scotland. Her father James V the King of Scotland, died in 1542. His daughter, Mary, who was only one week old, became Queen. Her mother was a Frenchwoman and she wanted to bring up her daughter at the French Court, so Mary was sent to France. While she was still only a child, Mary Stuart married Francis, the son of the French king. In 1559 Francis became the King of France. At the age of 17, Mary who was a beautiful woman with lovely red hair, then became Queen of two countries. But a year later King Francis died. Her mother-in-law, Mary of Guise, didn't want Mary in France and she had to return to Scotland.

Ss3-4: Mary married again. Her husband was her cousin Lord Darnley. But, to tell the trust, Mary and Darnley didn't even like each other. Moreover, Darnley was very jealous of an Italian, called Riccio, who was Mary's secret love.

One night Darnley and a group of his friends murdered Riccio in front of Mary.

Two years later, Darnley, died, too. His death was rather strange. While Mary was away dancing, Darnley was sleeping at home because he was ill. In the middle of the night the house exploded suddenly. And the strangest thing that Darnley's body was found not in the house, but in the garden.

Ss5-6: Can you guess who the murderer was? Will, some people thought that the Earl of Bothwell was to blame. But it has never been proved. Then came another shock for the people of Scotland. Mary married Bothwell. That was too much for the Scots. They rose in rebellion. As a result, the Scottish people made James, Mary's son, the King. Bothwell, who had escaped to Norway, went mad and died in prison. Mary escaped to England.

The English Queen, Elizabeth I, who was Mary's cousin, welcomed her, but the English lords didn't trust that beautiful Scottish Queen. She was put in prison, and then, finally in 1587 she was beheaded for treason.

It's interesting to mention here that when the executioner lifted up her head, he pick up the hair. It was a wig. Mary's own beautiful red hair had turned thin and grey.

So, you see, that in the end Mary had lost everything and everybody. She had lost the crowns of France and Scotland, her three husbands, her son, her life and even her famous beauty. We'd like to stress here that many famous historians and dramatists have drawn their attention to Mary's image. More often than not, they idealized her.

Ss1-2: And now our short history quiz to all those who are interested in history and are keen on English.

1. What can you say about the political views of Mary Stuart? ( She was the follower of absolute monarchy.)

2. It's a well-known fact that from the very first moment of Mary's coming to England she began to be the centre of different kinds of plots and all kinds of miseries. What was the aim of one of such plots? ( The plotters were planning the murder of Elizabeth in favour of Mary.)

3. Feeling sure that her time had come, Mary wrote her famous letter to Elizabeth making three requests. What were they about? ( Firstly, that she should be buried in France; secondly, that she mustn't be executed; thirdly, that after he death her servants should be sent home.)

4. What did Mary carry in her hands in the morning of the execution?

( The Bible in one hand and a crucifix in her other hand.)

5. What age was she executed at? ( At the age of 46.)

T: You've gathered a lot of useful and interesting information. You've made excellent presentations and, of course hope you have shown your good knowledge of not only English but of the English history as well.

Now it's high time for listening comprehension.

Listening Comprehension.

Listen twice and do the tasks. ( The tasks are given before listening.)

Florence Nightingale

( a video-portrait)

Florence Nightingale was one of the first woman in the world to organize a woman's medical service at the front.

The Nightingales were very wealthy and could live wherever they wanted. After getting married William Nightingale and his beautiful wife toured about Europe and visited many cities. On May 12th, 1820 in Florence, Italy, their first child was born, and they called their daughter Florence. Later the family lived most of the time in London, England.

Florence was well-educated in music, art and literature. In her childhood she nursed poor people and sick dogs, cats and horses. Most of all she wanted to become a nurse. Florence visited hospitals and read books on nursing.

At the age of 17 Florence was presented to Queen Victoria. With her sister the girl toured Italy, Germany and France where she learned the languages of those nations. In Germany Florence entered the Nurse Institute for a three-months training course. When she was 34 Florence became the Head of the Hospital for governesses in London. She organized the work of medical nurses very well there. The Sponsors of the hospital were pleased with her.

During the war in the Crimea Florence and her nurses took care of the wounded and dying. It was just at that time that Florence wrote a letter to the Minister of War and offered her service. So, when coming to the front, Florence and her nurses brought order and cleanliness into the Army hospitals. On seeing that the war hospitals were lacking beds, clothes, soap, food, plates and a lot of other essentials, she bought everything with her own money.

Every night with a little lamp to light her way. Florence walked by the wounds, comforting them, dressing the wounds, changing the dressing, etc. The soldiers loved here and called her" Lady with the Lamp"( or" Lady of the Lamp")

In 1853 Florence Nightingale was made Inspector of all hospitals at the front. Though she fell seriously ill, she continued her work.

When Florence came back to England, she was an invalid for life. Very often she couldn't even leave the house where she lived in, and there were the days when she had to keep to her bed for hours. But in spite of all that, Florence went on working hard.

Florence managed the change the whole system of hospital organization. She wrote books on nursing, and she changed Hospital planning in England. In 1907 Florence Nightingale became the first woman (to be) awarded the highest British civil order. Three years later on August 13th, 1910, Florence Nightingale died at the age of 90.

Today all Nurse Training Centres exist due to Florence Nightingale's first institute. Then there's a Museum of Florence Nightingale not far from Westminster Bridge in London. Her father was a lawyer, and her mother was a well-known Ukrainian writer. That prominent woman received her education at home because she was seriously ill. The doctors diagnosed her disease as tuberculosis of bones. She wrote her first verses at the age of 9. At 13 her first poem was published in the Lviv magazine "Zoria".

That phenomenal woman was married twice. Her husbands were very well-known people. A lot of progressive-minded people were frequent visitors at her place. Her literary legacy is rich and diverse. We hope that you've read and enjoyed her " Cassandra" ( 1903- 1907);" an Autumn Tale"( 1905);" Songs of the Forest"( 1911), and, undoubtedly, all intelligent people have read and admired her " On Winds of Song"( 1893)," Thoughts and Dreams"( 1899) and "Echoes Songs" ( 1893).

Of course, we must admit that all these works are immortal. We can't help mentioning here that that prominent woman knew German, French, English, Italian, Greek, Latin, Polish and some other languages. She was an excellent translator and translated a lot of works whiten by Henrick Heine, Shiller, Goethe, Byron, Shakespeare and others.

She died on August 1st, 1913 in Georgia, and was buried in Kyiv. She was really phenomenal! We think you have guessed who and what she was...(Lesia Ukrainka)

T: Well, now you are supposed to write down your own examples of outstanding  women. Give their names, the counties of their birthplace, professions and the spheres of their activities.

T: (5- 10 minutes later): Your time is up. As I can see, all of you have managed the task and I'm really pleased with you all. And what about some relaxation after your intellectual toil? We are all for it, aren't we? Let's sing one of our favourite songs.

A song:

“I Am Woman”

Helen Reddy

I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can face anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman

I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

IV. Summing-up

T: I hope that today we have proved again that the place of the woman is not in the kitchen but in numerous spheres of human activities.

I'm convinced that as long as our civilization exists, there'll always be prominent and phenomenal women influencing the course of historical events, the trend of them and, in general, the life of society we live in.

Thus, we can use the words" Your Majesty", addressing not only the most prominent women but all the women in the world. And it doesn't matter at all if a woman is fragile and weak, or strong and intelligent, patient and modest, a caring mother, a loving wife, a politician, a scientist, an actress, a princess, who ever a woman might be we'll always take off our hats to you. It's undoubted truth, isn't it?

Ss: Of course, it is.

T: Thank you all for your active participating in all the stages of our English class today. You've been so bright and quick-witted, and I can only hope that all of us have done a good job today, indeed. So, you are grades are good and excellent today. ( The teacher comments on the students marks)

Marie Curie was one of the most accomplished scientist in history. Together with your husband, Pierre, she discovered radium, and element widely used for treating cancer, and studied uranium and other radioactive substances. Pierre and Marie's amicable collaboration later helped to unlock the secrets of the atom.

Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, where her father was a professor of physics. At an early age, she displayed a brilliant mind and a blithe personality. Many of her friends would even describe short and easy-going. Her great exuberance for learning prompted her to continue with her studies after high school. She became disgruntled, however, when she learned that the university in Warsaw was closed to women. Determined to receive a higher education, she defiantly left Poland and in 1891 enter at the Sorbonne, a French University, where she earned her master's degree and doctorate in physics.

Marie was fortunate to have studied at the Sorbonne with some of the greatest scientists of her day, one of whom was Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre were married in 1895 and spent many productive years working together in the physics laboratory. A short time after they discovered radium, Pierre was killed by a horse-drawn wagon in 1906. Marie was stunned by this horrible misfortune and endured heart-breaking anguish. Despondently she recalled their close relationship and the joy that they had shared in scientific research. The fact that she had two young daughters to raise by herself greatly increased your distress.

Curie's feeling of desolation finally began to fade when she was asked to succeed her husband is a physics professor at the Sorbonne. She was the first woman to be given a professorship at the world-famous university. In 1911 she received the Nobel Prize in chemistry for isolating radium.
