Procedure:
Teacher: Look at the blackboard. Let’s pronounce the word ‘now’. Are you sitting now? ‘Yes, I am. I am sitting now. We learn English every Tuesday. We are learning English now. What is the difference between the sentences?
We’re going to learn the Present Continuous Tense. We use it in everyday life. Look! We use this tense to talk about things that are happening or changing now, at the present moment, these days.
For example: Olga is sitting at the desk now. I’m speaking to you now.
This form of the verb (the Present Continuous) is used for present actions, something you are doing now. We form sentences with ‘you’, ‘we’, ‘they’, ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘it’ in a different way.
Teacher: Children, do you remember the rhyme “I’m counting to ten”? Recite it, please. (Children are reciting the rhyme.)
Pupils: I’m counting to ten.
You are writing with a pen.
She is looking at the door.
He is sitting on the floor.
We are working very well.
Waiting, waiting for the bell.
Teacher: Tell me, please, in what way do we make sentences in the Present Continuous Tense?
Pupils: (Children are reciting the poem using the moving table with the pictures. They are putting the verb to be (am, is, are) on its place in the table.
I am eating bananas.
Коли я банани їм
Перед eating ставлю am.
She/ He is cooking rice.
Коли мама варить рис
Перед cooking ставлю is.
We you, they are sleeping now.
Коли ти і коли ви,
Ми і хто – небудь вони
Зараз сплять, та не вчора,
Перед sleeping ставлю are.
Teacher: There are some specialties in spelling the verbs in the Present Continuous Tense. I want you to know them. Open your GBs and read the rules on page 14.
Teacher: Now, children, choose the verbs in this tense and write them down in your exercise books. (Children are reciting rhymes.)
The flowers are blooming,
The sky is blue,
The rains are few.
The wind is blowing.
The ground is white
All day and all night.
It is raining, it is wet.
The weather is frosty
And windy too.
Teacher: Well, let ‘s check in. Look at the blackboard. Spell them in a right way, don’t forget the rule.
Shine- is shining; bloom- is blooming; fall – is falling; blow – is blowing; rain – is raining.
Stop – stopping, begin- beginning, run – running, swim - swimming;
Die – dying, lie- lying, say- saying.
Teacher: Now, children, play the “Champion game” . Who can make up more sentences? Use the patterns and word combinations and add some more.
I am …. ing now. She (He) is… ing now. They are …..ing now.
To sit at the desk, to stand at the blackboard, to explain the rule, to listen to the teacher, to write sentences.
Teacher: Children, focus your attention on the short forms of the verb ‘to be’ (-’m, -’re, ‘s). We use short forms for speaking or writing to friends.
What is Tom doing? What is William doing? (Chidren are acting.)
Mother: Tom, what are you doing?
Tom: Nothing, Mum.
Mother: Is William here?
Tom: Yes, Mum.
Mother: What is he doing?
Tom: Helping me, Mum.
Teacher: So, in the interrogative form the auxiliary verb is placed before the subject.
Am I … ing now? Is he …..ing now? Are you ...ing now? Are they … ing now?
Where is she …ing now? Why are you …. ing now? With whom are you …ing now?
Script. It is morning. The children are in the classroom. They are learning about the Present Continuous now. Teacher: It’s ten o’clock. What’s your family doing now? Taras: I don’t know. I think my father is playing basketball. Teacher: Is he a basketball player? Taras: No, he’s a PE teacher. My mother is probably talking to a patient. Teacher: Is she a doctor? Taras: Yes, she is. My sister is doing a test. She is a student. Teacher: What about your grandparents? Taras: I’ve got two grandmothers and a grandfather. One grandma is cooking now, the other grandma is probably watching TV and, I guess, grandpa is working in the garden. Teacher: What about your friends? Taras: Ihor is here. He is listening to me.
