Lesson plan: “At the clothes shop”
Skill focus: Reading
Level: 5th grade (A1–A2)
Objective:
Learners will develop reading comprehension skills using a short dialogue/story about buying clothes in a shop. They will learn related vocabulary and practice reading for gist and detail.
Lesson stages:
1. Warm-up
Greet the class.
Quick activity: “Guess the item” – teacher describes a clothing item, learners guess.
“It’s warm. You wear it in winter. It’s a coat!”
Ask: “Where can you buy clothes?”, “Do you like shopping?”
2. Lead-in
Show a picture of a clothes shop (with labels: trousers, dress, hat, cashier, fitting room)
Pre-teach vocabulary: shop assistant, customer, changing room, try on, buy, price
Use flashcards to match word → picture → definition.
3. Pre-reading
Set the scene: “You go to a clothes shop to buy a T-shirt. What do you say?”
Predicting activity:
Show a short dialogue title (“At the clothes shop”) and ask:
“What do you think they will say?”
Teach a few useful phrases from the dialogue:
“Can I help you?”
“I’m looking for…”
“Can I try it on?”
“I’ll take it.”
4. Reading
Read a short dialogue between a customer and a shop assistant (text 8–10 lines).
First reading – for general understanding (GIST):
Who are the people? Where are they? What do they buy?
Second reading – for detail:
Fill in the blanks
True/False statements
Match questions with answers
Put the dialogue in order
5. Post-reading
Pair role-play: Learners act out the dialogue, then create their own.
Ask learners to change one item in the dialogue (buy shoes instead of a T-shirt).
Group discussion: “What’s your favourite item of clothing? Where do you buy clothes?”
6. Homework
Task: Write a mini-dialogue (4–6 lines) between a shop assistant and a customer.
Optional: Draw a small clothes shop and label items.
7. Feedback and reflection
Class reflection:
“What new words did you learn?” “Was it easy or hard?”
Learners rate the lesson from 1 to 5 (fingers).
Teacher ends with praise: “Great work today! You’re smart shoppers!”
