Lesson plan: “My favourite clothes”
Skill focus: Listening
Level: 5th grade (A1–A2)
Objective:
Learners will develop listening comprehension skills by listening to a short dialogue or monologue about favourite clothes. They will expand their vocabulary and practice listening for gist and specific information.
Lesson stages:
1. Warm-up
Greet the class.
Ask: “What are you wearing today?” – use simple answers.
Play a quick game: “Clothes bingo” or “Stand up if you are wearing…”
2. Lead-in
Show flashcards or pictures of clothes (jeans, dress, sweater, jacket, boots).
Ask: “What’s your favourite item of clothing?”
Introduce the topic: “Today we will listen to a person talking about their favourite clothes.”
3. Pre-listening
Pre-teach key vocabulary:
favourite
comfortable
colours (red, blue, green)
adjectives (soft, cool, warm)
Predicting activity: Show a picture of a person wearing clothes and ask:
“What do you think they like to wear?”
“Why do people like some clothes more than others?”
4. Listening
First listening – for gist:
Play a short audio (a child or teen describing favourite clothes).
Ask: “What is the speaker’s favourite item of clothing?”
Second listening – for detail:
Give tasks such as:
True/false statements
Multiple choice questions
Matching clothes to reasons (“blue jeans – very comfortable”)
Fill in missing words
5. Post-listening
Pair or group activity:
Learners talk about their own favourite clothes using guided questions:
What is your favourite clothing item?
What colour is it?
When do you wear it?
Why do you like it?
Use sentence starters:
“My favourite clothes are…”
“I like them because…”
6. Homework
Task: Write 4–5 sentences about your favourite clothes and draw a picture.
Example: “My favourite clothes are my red hoodie and jeans. They are soft and warm. I wear them in autumn.”
7. Feedback and reflection
Ask learners: “What did you hear today?” “What new words did you learn?”
Show smiley faces for them to choose how they felt about the lesson.
Teacher gives praise and encouragement.
