The name Canada comes from the old word “kanata”, meaning “village” or “settlement”.
It is situated in the northern part of North America. Canada is washed by the Pacific Ocean, by the Atlantic Ocean and by the Arctic Ocean. It borders the USA.
The capital of the country is Ottawa. Other large important cities of Canada are Montreal, Toronto (the biggest), Vancouver, Edmonton, Hamilton, Winnipeg and Quebec.

Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. Each province has its own government.
The total area of Canada is almost 10 million km2. It is the second largest country in the world after Russia!

The population of the country is about 38 million. People of different nationalities live in Canada.
The majority of Canadians live in the southern parts of Canada.
Can you guess why?
Canada has 2 official languages: English and French so that citizens have the right to speak either English or French in court and other public institutions. Besides these, other languages are spoken there, for example: Italian, Chinese, German, Polish, Dutch. (and there are even some native languages.)
The national flag of Canada is known as the «Maple leaf».
Formally, the head of the country is the Queen or the King of Great Britain and they are represented by the Governor General.
Canada is very mountainous! The largest mountain chain of the country is the Rocky Mountains.
Canada is the country of lakes. There are five Great Lakes between Canada and the USA and a lot of others (over a million!), for example: Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake and Lake Winnipeg. Canada also has large rivers: the Mackenzie (the longest), the Yukon, the St. Lawrence River.
