Lesson’s type: systematization pupils’ knowledge
The aims of the lesson:
– Practical: to improve competence of speaking, reading and writing; to form skills during the using of new lexical unities.
– Educational: to train skills of the dialogical and monological speech; to improve pupils’ knowledge about sports proverbs and saying.
– Developing: to develop students’ memorization, concentration; to continue to form speaking and reading skills.
– Cultural: to know the new information about ball games in Great Britain.
Equipment: a text-book “We Learn English” by Alla Nesvit, presentation, blackboard, pictures, cards.
Procedure of the Lesson
T.: Good morning, pupils! I am glad to see you today!
Ps.: Good morning, teacher. We are glad to see you, too!
T.: Good! We continue to study the theme «Sport».
II. Warm – up
T.: As you know sport and healthy are closely connected with each other. Everybody want to go in for sport and to be healthy and strong. What proverbs and saying about sports and health do you know? ( Pupils say their favourite proverbs).
T.: Good job! Now let’s do some interesting tests.
1. Finish the English proverb: « A sound mind in a sound…» ( Slide 2).
2. Finish the English proverb: « Healthy is better than…» (Slide 3).

3. Finish the English proverb: « After dinner sit a while, after supper walk…»

T.: Perfect! Tell me, please, what summer (winter) sports do you know?
P. 1: I know such summer sports as: volleyball, cycling, driving.

T.: What summer sports do you enjoy?
P. 3: I enjoy cycling.
T.: What is your favourite sport or game?
P. 4: My favourite sport is boxing.
P. 5: My favourite game is cricket.
T.: Do you like to play games or do you like to watch them?
P. 6: I like to play games.
T.: Very well!
T.: Today we will know new information about ball games. Please, look at the pictures on the interactive board. After that, listen to me carefully! I’ll read games’ descriptions and you should guess its names (Slide 8).
T.: 1. A game played between two teams of eleven people, where each team tries to win by kicking a ball into the other team's goal (football).
2. A game played by two teams of five players who score points by throwing a large ball through an open net hanging from a metal ring (basketball).
3. A game played between two or four people on a special playing area that involves hitting a small ball across a central net using a racket (tennis).
4. A game played between two or four people on a special closed playingarea that involves hitting a small rubber ball against a wall (squash).
5. A sport where two teams try to score points by carrying an oval ball across aparticular line or kicking it over and between an H-shaped set of posts (rugby).
6. A game played outside on grass in which each player tries to hit a small ball into a series of nine or 18 small holes, using a long, thin stick (golf).
7. A game played especially in North America by two teams of nine players, in which a player hits a ball with a bat (= stick) and tries to runaround four bases on a large field before the other team returns the ball (baseball).
T.: Fantastic job! Now please, make up sentences with these ball games.

T.: Now work in groups of four. Write a list of kinds of sport on a sheet of paper. One person thinks of a sport and the others have to guess which sport it is.
Example:

A: No, it isn’t.
C: Do you use a ball?
A: No, I don’t.
D: Do you compete with others?
A: Yes, I do.
B: Is it a water sport?
A: Yes, it is.
C: Is it yachting?
A: Yes, it is. It is yachting.

What sport (game) you enjoy most, why you are fond of it, which season is good for it, what kinds of games you can’t play yet, but would like to learn.
