1. Ladies and Gentlemen! We are glad to greet you in our hall! As you know foreign languages play a very important role in the lives of people. Everybody knows that knowledge of foreign languages opens many doors and gives many possibilities.

2.  We learn two languages in our gymnasium: English and German which will help us to broaden and enrich our outlook. And today we invite you to make a trip to one of the countries which language we learn – the UK.

1. I’m sure that everybody is fond of travelling, aren’t you? I’m very glad that you like to travel either in reality or in dreams. And now we’ll start our imaginary trip to these islands. You can see a big ship. Its name is DISCOVERY.  The main aim is to discover for us this country.

2. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a beautiful country with its unique and inimitable climate and history. It’s the country where you still as in fairy tales can meet the queen and the prince. It’s full of wonders.

Let’s board the ship and begin our trip.

1. The UK consists of four countries: Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and of course England. It has its own flag – Union Jack.  IT IS MADE UP OF THREE CROSSES:  THE CROSS OF ST. GEORGE ( THE PATRON SAINT OF ENGLAND),  THE CROSS OF ST. ANDREW (THE PATRON SAINT OF SCOTLAND) AND THE CROSS OF ST. PATRICK (THE PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND) which symbolizes the union of the countries of the UK, its trident and its anthem.  And as the queen still reigns in this country the anthem sounds “God save our gracious queen”

 (The Anthem)

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!’

Unfortunately we haven’t got enough time to visit every corner of this country, so we have some glimpses of it. Let’s go to the Northern Ireland and cross the Irish Sea and here we are in Northern Ireland

1. Dear ladies and gentlemen welcome to the one of the most beautiful country of the United Kingdom  - The Northern  Ireland

2. The Northern  Ireland is situated on  an island on the westernmost edge of Europe. Northern Ireland is composed of 26 districts, derived from the boroughs of Belfast and Londonderry and the counties of Antrim, Down, Londonderry, and Tyrone. Together they are commonly called Ulster It is slightly larger than Connecticut.

            1.   Northern Ireland is situated on the island of Ireland and has a population of about 1,5 million people. Its capital is a large port – Belfast and the symbol of the country is a shamrock. Do you know that the national emblem of Ireland is a shamrock. It illustrates the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish. Inside the shamrock there is a red hand. Why is it here?

2. The legend tells us that 3,000 years ago two Viking chiefs went with their men in big boats to Ireland. They decided that the man who would touch the Irish land first would be the king of it. When the boats were quite near the land one of the chiefs cut off his right hand and threw it over to the land. His hand touched the land, first and he became the king of Ireland.

 1. The Irish weather is very changeable, it often rains there. There is an old Irish saying : “ Ireland is the cleanest place in the world because God washes it every day”.

2. Ireland is a nation of storytellers. The tradition dates back to Celtic bards, who would record and recite the country's history. There is one of the best legend of Ireland about Ireland's Magic Harp

The Legend of Magic Harp

In the misty hills of Ireland
A long, long time ago,
There lived a lovely Irish lass
Who loved her father so.

One day he went to fetch some wood,
But he did not soon return,
And so his loving daughter's heart
Was filled with great concern.

She searched for him throughout the day,
And when a fog came in
She wept, for she was fearful
They would never meet again.

Then suddenly, a little band
Of leprechauns came by.
They all were very saddened.
To hear the lovely maiden cry.

They asked if they might have a lock
Of her long and golden hair,
Then tied the silken strands across
A crooked limb with care.

'It was a magic harp they'd made,
And when the maiden touched each strand,
The music led her father home
Across the misty land.

And to this day the harp remains
A cherished symbol of
The blessings of the hearth and home
The Irish dearly love.

1/March 17th marks the day of St Patrick, celebrated by millions of people around the world. In Ireland, St Patrick’s Day was always held as an important religious day to celebrate the teachings of Christianity by St Patrick. As St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland it became a major day in Ireland’s religious calendar and has always been mainly associated with Christianity.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is here, you see.
We'll pick some shamrocks, one, two, three.
We'll count the leaves and look them over,
And maybe find a four-leafed clover.
I'll sew green buttons on my vest,
Green for St. Patrick is the best.
I'll wear a green hat, very high,
And dance a jig--at least I'll try!

1. Many people wear something green on St Patrick ’s Day which is known in the U.S. and other countries as wearing of the green. Usually people would wear green to show their Irish heritage & culture  on the day that everyone’s Irish but in Ireland the wearing of the green doesn’t really exist, well in terms of celebrating our culture. However, we do wear Shamrocks to symbolize the teaching of the holy trinity by St Patrick. A small bunch of Shamrocks would be pinned to the breast of our outer coats.

2. You may end up being the luckiest person alive if you ever manage to catch a Leprechaun but there again it could bring more than enough trouble for what its worth. A Leprechaun is a smart, devious little thing and who’ll do anything to escape capture even if it means turning you into a frog.

1. It is said that every Leprechaun has a pot of gold, hidden deep in the Irish countryside. To protect the leprechaun’s pot of gold the Irish fairies gave them magical powers to use if ever captured by a human or an animal. if you get lucky  and manage to catch a leprechaun you need to be smarter than him or else you will be easily tricked which can have damaging results, never take your eye off him or he will vanish.

2. A captured leprechaun will grant you three wishes or a gold coin to bribe his way to freedom but this is when things can go terrible wrong if the wrong decisions are made.

So, you can see how beautiful our country is. It is rich in traditions and legends. We love it with all our hearts, and we are sure that you’ll like it too.  Thank you for your attention!
