Happy St.Nicholas Day and Merry Christmas!

Teacher: Good morning, dear guests!

  It is winter now, one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. Many people like this season very much. The snow is glittering in the sun. Nature is beautiful and magic. We celebrate St. Nicholas, New Year and Christmas in this season and we always look forward to them.

So, welcome to our St. Nicholas Party. This party is a great time to get to know the history of this holiday, to sing songs, to play games and have a lot of presents from St. Nicholas.
Now, look. We have many symbols of our holiday.

A FIREPLACE, STOCKINGS, SANTA CLAUS with his BAG full of presents, ST.NICHOLAS and of course our CHRISTMAS TREE.

But what should we do to start celebrating our holiday?

Children: To decorate our Christmas Tree!!!

Teacher: We have some magic balls. Write all that you want to wish your classmates and hang these balls. I AM THE FIRST!!!

                     DECORATING CHRISTMAS TREE!!!

Teacher: You know St. Nicholas Day is celebrated on the
6th of December in Britain, but we celebrated it on the 19th of December in Ukraine. I know he was a bishop and he liked doing presents. I wonder where he was born and some facts of his life.

 We have some video about St.Nicholas, can you help us to translate it?

POWER POINT PRESENTATION (two or more pupils tell the guests some facts about life of St. Nicolas –

St Nicholas Day is very special

For Ukrainian children and adults.

Everyone believes in miracles

And look forward to receiving presents.

Nicholas from modern-day Turkey

Was known for his big heart.

He gave money to the poor,

Helped the sick and who worked hard.

He wasn’t doing it for the fame

But came to help secretly, at night.

Nicholas was made a bishop

By the grateful people. They were right!

Nicholas is also called the Wonderworker

As there were a lot of miracles during his life.

Now he is one of the most famous saints.

He is the modern Santa’s prototype.

This holiday was brought to our country

With the Christian faith.

As Nicholas is charitable,

This day he helps less fortunate.

Children are told lots of stories

About the life of this saint.

Nicholas is a great example

Of good character traits.

Shortly before this holiday

Write letters to St Nicholas

Where they list their presents.

St Nicholas gives sweets and toys

For those kids who behave well.

He puts the presents under the pillows.

(The reason why I cannot tell).

Those kids who behaved badly

During the whole year

Have another chance –

St Nicholas is kind and fair.

The Ukrainian version of Santa Claus,

St Nicholas brings more than just presents.

It marks the beginning of the winter holiday season.

This day brings joy for both kid s and their parents.

Teacher: The story was so interesting. Thank you.
Now I really understand why people around the world love him so much. By the way do you know a song about St. Nicholas?
Сhildren :  Of course. Jolly old St. Nicholas.

                                         A SONG
Jolly old St. Nicholas, Lean your ear this way!
Don’t you tell a single soul, What I’m going to say;
Christmas Eve is coming soon; Now, you dear old man,
Whisper what you’ll bring to me: Tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve, When I'm fast asleep,
Down the chimney broad and black, With your pack you'll creep;
All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row;
Mine will be the shortest one, You'll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates, Susy wants a dolly;
Nellie wants a story book; She thinks dolls are folly;
As for me, my little brain isn’t very bright;
Choose for me, old Santa Claus. What you think is right.

 Е: I like this song. And you?

And now tell me, please, St.Nickolas or Santa Claus, who is better?

And now listen and be very attentive, because I have some questions for you!!!!

Teacher: Presents under the Christmas Tree, presents under the pillows…

And what about these stockings on the fireplace?

Children:  Do you know why English people hang stockings on the fireplace?

      Once upon a time a poor nobleman and his three daughters lived. The father was depressed as his daughters could not marry without dowries. One night after the daughters had washed out their clothes they hung their stockings over the fireplace to dry. That night Saint Nicholas threw three coins down a chimney of the home of three poor sisters. Each of the coins landed inside separate stockings.

      In modern times the Christmas stocking is often used as a holder of small gifts for children. Children wait for Santa Claus and other miracles. Santa Claus puts presents into their stockings.

     The original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas was born in Turkey in the fourth century. He was imprisoned and tortured. Constantine the emperor of Rome allowed Nicolas to go free.

      St. Nicholas loved children dearly and gave them presents. For many centuries he is their patron saint. The Dutch kept the legend of St. Nicholas alive. They spelled St. Nicholas as Sint Nikolaas, then as Sinterklaas and finally as Santa Claus. He looked like an ordinary person, but wearing a red cloak.

      In 1930’s the Coca-Cola Company ran an advertisement showing Santa Claus the way we know him now; rather fat and jolly, with his red suit and long white whiskers.

Teacher: And do you want to know what will happen with you in the New Year? I can help you!!! I have a magic hat with many predictions.

St. Nicholas

St. NicholasI

In the heavens lives a Saint,
St. Nicholas is he.
He loves to help all people,
and do so secretly.

Down to earth he journeys
on his special day each year.
He brings great joy and happiness,
and LOTS of holiday cheer!

He and his white horse travel,
from star to star to star.
Children anxiously wait for him,
children near and far.

And so St. Nicholas comes to us all,
sharing gifts and sharing love.
St. Nicholas, you are a blessed saint,
sent to us from Heaven above!

The Real St. Nicholas

St Nicholas

The real St. Nicholas lived a long time ago in a place called Asia Minor. It is now the country of Turkey. His family was Greek and his name was Nicholas.

Nicholas’ parents died when he was a teenager. They left him a lot of money which made him a rich young man. Nicholas went to live with his uncle who was a priest.

Nicholas heard about a man who had lost all his money. He had three daughters who were old enough to get married. But in those days young women had to have money in order to get married. This money was a “dowry” and it was used to help the new family get started. If you didn’t have dowry money, you didn’t get married.

This family was so poor they had nothing left to eat. The daughters were going to be sold as slaves because they couldn’t live at home any longer. They were very sad. They wouldn’t be able to have families of their own. And they would have to be slaves—no longer able to decide where they would live or what they would do.

The night before the oldest daughter was to be sold, she washed her stockings and put them in front of the fire to dry. Then all of them went to sleep—the father and the three daughters.

In the morning the daughter saw a lump in her stocking. Reaching in, she found a small, heavy bag. It had gold inside! Enough to provide food for the family and money for her dowry. Oh, how happy they were!

The next morning, another bag with gold was found. Imagine! Two of the daughters would now be saved. Such joy!

And the next night, the father planned to stay awake to find out who was helping his daughters. He dozed off, but heard a small “clink” as another bag landed in the room. Quickly he jumped up and ran out the door. Who did he catch ducking around the corner?

Nicholas, the young man who lived with his uncle. “Nicholas, it is you! Thank you for helping us—I hardly know what to say!” Nicholas said, “Please, do not thank me—thank God that your prayers have been answered. Do not tell others about me.”

Nicholas continued helping people. He always tried to help secretly. He didn’t want any attention or thanks. Years passed and he was chosen to be a bishop. Bishops look after their people as shepherds look after their sheep. And that is what Nicholas did. When there wasn’t any food, he found wheat; so no one went hungry. He always helped people in trouble. All his life Nicholas showed people how to love God and care for each other.

Everyone loved Nicholas. After he died, they told stories of the good and kind things Nicholas had done. Sailors took these stories about Nicholas everywhere they went. Some of the stories were about his special care for children—helping and protecting them when danger threatened. And so more and more people learned about good, kind Nicholas. They wanted to be like him. He is an example of how we should live. And that is why he is a saint.

This is the story of the real St. Nicholas. To this day people say that St. Nicholas, or Santa, is the special friend of children.

Додаток 4   POEMS

Tonight when it is dark
Saint Nicolas may come.
He loves to bring a big surprise.
He gives the children toys.

Cookies, apples,
Balls and games,
Bells and whistles,
Dolls and trains.
Surprises for the boys.
Surprises for the girls.
Saint Nicholas is our friend in heaven.
He is the children's saint.

We thank you, good Saint Nicholas!
We thank you for the toys!
We thank you, good Saint Nicholas!
You bring us many joys.

Santa Claus is round and plump;
St. Nicholas is tall and thin.

Santa Claus wears a stocking cap;
St. Nicholas wears a bishop's hat.

Santa Claus comes December 25th;
St. Nicholas comes December 6th.

Santa Claus is often seen in stores;
St. Nicholas is often seen in churches.

Santa Claus flies through the air—from the North Pole;
St. Nicholas walked the earth, caring for those in need.

Santa Claus, for some, replaces Jesus at Christmas;
St. Nicholas, for all, points to Jesus at Christmas.

Santa Claus isn't bad;
St. Nicholas is just better!

A Letter To St.Nicholas

Dear Saint Nicholas,

we are Ukrainian children from Kalynivka. It is a big modern city in Vinnytsa region.

First of all we would like to thank you for the last year’s presents. They were super!

We know you are a great gift-giver, a patron of sailors and voyagers, a protector of children. You can see our behaviour every day. Yes, sometimes we are naughty, noisy and lazy. But mostly we are kind to our classmates, polite to our teachers and are good helping hands for our parents. We like our school life and do the best to get good education and become good citizens of our Motherland.

You know Ukraine is in troubles now. So we beg you to give peace to our people, to protect us.

Besides we ask you to give good health and wealth to our parents and teachers.

And, of course, don’t forget about us. We are looking forward to the presents we deserve.

       Love and best wishes,

                          Ukrainian children.
