Contest “How well do you know Britain?”

Objectives: by the end of the lesson students will br able to

- revise the material on the topic;

- summarise their knowledge about the topic;

- develop their listening, reading and speaking skills;

- widen their outlook.

Equipment: pictures, cards, photos of London, the map of Great Britain, the records.

PROCEDURE

I. INTRODUCTION. GREETING

T: Good morning, everyone. I'm glad to see you today.

Ss: Good morning. We are glad to see you, too.

T: We are having an unusual lesson today — a competi-tion. I'll divide you into two teams, and we'll have some contests on the topic "Great Britain". You have to answer my questions and do many interesting tasks.

For every correct answer you'll get a little heart. At the end of the lesson we'll count your hearts and choose the winner. Your captain will give a mark to every member of the team.

II. WARM-UP

T: Before the competition, let's warm up. I have some questions for each team, answer them quickly, please.

For the 1st team

1. What day is it today?

2. How much is ten plus two?

3. Where is Great Britain situated?

4. How is the flag of Great Britain called?

5. What is the favourite game in Britain?

6. Who wrote "Robinson Crusoe"?

7. Past simple of the verb “go”.

For the 2nd team

1. What season is it now?

2. How much is twenty and ten?

3. What is the capital of Great Britain?

4. Who is the head of the state in Britain?

5. What is a well-known drink of Great Britain?

6. Who wrote "The Jungle Book"?

7. What holiday is the 25' of December?

8. Past simple of the verb "do".

9. The symbol of London.

 

III. MAIN PART

T: Well done! But it was just a warm-up and now you'll have the real competition. The first round is about Geography.

2. FOCUS ON GRAMMAR

T: Look at the blackboard. Read the sentences and correct them if necessary. Answer the questions.

3. SPEAKING

T: Well done! You like poems and songs, that's why the next round is called "Arts"

It is for your captains.

They will describe a famous English person connected with arts.

They may be an artist, a singer, a writer, an actor.

Listen to a piece of information and guess his/her name.

You can ask some questions.

The captains speak about Joanne Kathleen Rowling and Britney Spears.

Example.

It is the best-selling English writer. She was born in 1965 in Yate, England. She was very imaginative.

Her favourite activity was telling stories to her friends at lunchtime.

After studying in Paris she moved to London to work as a secretary. In the summer of 1990 the idea came to her of a boy who was a wizard and didn't know it.

He went to magic school. In 1992 the young writer moved to Portugal to teach English.

Then she returned to Britain with her baby daughter and finished her book.

Her famous book was published in 1997 and won a lot of prizes in Britain and the USA.

Captain: Do you know who the writer is?

S1: Where does the writer live now?

C: In Edinburgh, Scotland.

S2: Is she married?

C: Yes, she is.

S3: What family does she have?

C: She lives with her husband and two daughters and ne a son.

S4: How many books did she write?

C: Seven books.

S5: What are they about?

C: They are about a boy, wizard, his childhood, and adventures at Hogwarts School.

Ss: It's Joanne Rowling.

 

This man was one of the famous Liverpool four. "The Beatles" became popular in England in 1962 when their first single "Love me do" entered the Hit Parade. During the sixties they made successful records and interesting films.

This singer caused antiBeatles demonstrations in America by saving that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ.

In seventies the Beatles went off and he became a solo performer and then a speculator in New York. In 1980 he was killed.

Who is it?

S1: Who killed him?

C: The killer was Mark Chapman from Hawaii.

S2: Why did he kill him?

C: Chapman was his fan and had tried to imitate him.

He was mad.

S3: Name the members of "The Beatles" without him.

C: Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Ss: This is John Lennon.

IV. SUMMING-UP

T: Our competition is over. How many hearts have you had? The winner is the team of ..., it takes a diploma.
