Scotland is one of the four parts of the UK. The country is divided into Highlands and Lowlands.

The highest mountain Ben Nevis (1,342 m) is located in Scottish Highlands.

. There are many lochs (“lakes”). The deepest loch is the Loch Ness. People believe that a monster lives there!  

   Scotland was an independent country up till the 15th century. It was united with England in 1707 when King James VI of Scotland became King James I of both England and Scotland.

Edinburgh was built on seven hills. The heart of Edinburgh is the thousand -year-old castle, where the kings of Scotland lived for centuries.  

The thistle has become the national emblem of Scotland because during a surprise night attack this plant saved the Scottish soldiers.

 The invaders shouted crossing the field because their bare feet touched the thorns of the thistle.

Saint Andrew was an Apostol of Jesus Christ. He was put to death on a cross (x shaped), to which he was tied, not nailed on the 30th of November 60AD.

1200 years ago in Scotland King Angus  prayed to Saint Andrew  before a battle. He saw white clouds on a blue sky in the shape of a diagonal cross. Angus won his enemies.

  From that time Saint Andrew and his Cross were adopted as the national symbols of Scotland.  St Andrew's Day (30^th of November)  is a day to celebrate Scottish culture, food and dance.

 The bagpipe is the traditional Scottish musical instru - ment.  Scottish national skirt is called a kilt. Scots also wear a “sporran” (pouch) on top of the kilt and long stockings.

Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) is more important to Scottish people than Christmas. At midnight, people stand in a circle, cross their arms, hold hands with the people next to them and sing “Auld Lang Syne”, an original Scottish song.

The First-Footer. An old belief says that if the first person who enters the Scottish house after the beginning of a new year  is a dark-haired man with a piece of coal, all the members of this family will have good luck.

  Highland Games celebrate Scottish culture.  There are Bagpipes and Highland dancing competitions,

  hammer  tossing,  caber  throwing, stone putting.

Golf is the national Scottish sport. It has been played in Scotland since the 15th century.

To love the national dish of Scotland, you have to love the sheep. Haggis is made with the heart, liver, and lungs of a sheep and then boiled in the animal’s stomach.

Many people in Scotland have the name Mac Donald or Mac Kenzie. “Mac” means “son of” and they belong to the same family or clan. The Gaelic word “clan” means “family».
