Scotland

Scotland is one of the four parts of the UK. The country is divided into Highlands and Lowlands.

The highest mountain Ben Nevis (1,342 m) is located in Scottish Highlands.

. There are many lochs (“lakes”). The deepest loch is the Loch Ness. People believe that a monster lives there!

Saint Andrew was an Apostol of Jesus Christ. He was put to death on a cross (x shaped), to which he was tied, not nailed on the 30th of November 60AD.

1200 years ago in Scotland King Angus  prayed to Saint Andrew  before a battle. He saw white clouds on a blue sky in the shape of a diagonal cross. Angus won his enemies.

 The bagpipe is the traditional Scottish musical instru - ment.  Scottish national skirt is called a kilt. Scots also wear a “sporran” (pouch) on top of the kilt and long stockings.

Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) is more important to Scottish people than Christmas. At midnight, people stand in a circle, cross their arms, hold hands with the people next to them and sing “Auld Lang Syne”, an original Scottish song.

 

The First-Footer. An old belief says that if the first person who enters the Scottish house after the beginning of a new year  is a dark-haired man with a piece of coal, all the members of this family will have good luck.
