Lesson procedure
Students look at their sets of cards, listen to the teacher and repeat the pairs of words.
First, SS repeat the words using normal voices and afterwards happy, sad, angry, etc.
After the sufficient amount of repetition, call on individual students to read different pairs of words.
“Voting”. The teacher says one word of the pair and the students “vote” for the sound they heard, raising their papers with the correct letters. Repeat this exercise a couple of times, then call on a few confident students to perform your role.
“The correct order”. The teacher chooses 5 or 6 pairs of words and says them in a mixed-up order. The students use their copies with words and put the correct number from 1 to 10 (or 12) next to each card. Afterwards the students exchange their worksheets with their partners and the teacher reveals the correct order by putting their set of cards on the board in the correct order. Students correct each other’s work.
“Phonics relay”. Students are divided into two teams. The teacher spreads the 2 sets of cards (one for each team) of 5 or 6 pairs on the last desks in the rows (one desk for each team). Then the teacher says one word from the pair. One member of each team races to their desks, collects the correct card and races back to their teams. Continue till all the students in the teams have participated twice.
“I have… Who has?”. The teacher hands out the game cards (2 for each student). One of the students gets up and says what’s written on their card. For example, “I have thin, who has Ruth?”, and afterwards puts up their card on the board. The student who has “Ruth” written in the “I have…” box gets up and continues the game until all the cards are put on the board.
