8. Reading: A busy week at Nova Logistics

Read the email from Karen, the operations manager. (Nova Logistics is a fictional company.)

Subject: This week at Nova Logistics

Hi team,

It’s going to be a busy week, so here is a quick update.

Tomorrow morning we’re meeting our new client, Fresh Foods, at 10:00. They’re visiting our warehouse and I’m giving a short presentation. Please arrive early! I think they’ll like our new tracking system, but I’m not sure.

On Wednesday, Tom is flying to Madrid for a conference. He’s coming back on Friday. Nobody is going to cover his desk, so please answer his emails if he doesn’t reply.

We also have some big plans for the next few months. We’re going to open a new office in Manchester in January, and we already have a building. We’re also going to hire three new drivers. Sara is going to interview the candidates next week.

There is one problem: the server isn’t working. Tim says, “I’ll check it after lunch.” I hope it will work again by tonight, because we can’t send any orders without it.

Finally, some good news. Sales are up 15% and our clients are happy, so I think we’ll make a profit this year. To celebrate, the company is going to organise a party on Friday evening. I’ll bring the cake!

Future Review: Extension Pack

Teacher’s pages | Sections 8–15 | Timings, answer key and notes

This pack is original supplementary material. It continues the numbering of the worksheet (sections 1–7) and is designed to be used alongside it. It adds a reading text, vocabulary, more practice with the present continuous, error correction, a role-play and a writing task.

Adding all sections takes about 60 minutes. Set section 15 (writing) as homework and it takes about 50. Many answers depend on the context, so accept a reasonable alternative if the student can explain it.

Notes for each section

  • 8. Reading. Ask the student to read once for the main idea (what is the email about?), then do the tasks. In task D, elicit the reason before the name of the form. Task E is a personalised speaking follow-up.

  • 9. Vocabulary. Check that the student knows the noun phrases. Ask for an example sentence for two or three of them.

  • 10. Grammar. Use as a quick reference. Point out the position of probably and the I don’t think… will pattern.

  • 11. Practice 5. In part B, students must not show each other their cards. Possible meeting times are listed in the key.

  • 12 and 13. Ask students to justify each choice. In section 13, tell them that some sentences are correct.

  • 14. Speaking. Give one minute to read the role cards. Note errors on the board for feedback afterwards, and don’t interrupt fluency.

  • 15. Writing. Ask students to underline their future forms before handing in. Correct with a code (e.g. T = wrong form, WO = word order).
