King Lear
Author
There is a wise saying, “It is easy to govern the kingdom but it is difficult to govern your own family.” With the help of our drama we want to prove it.
Once upon a time there lived a man whose name was Lear. He was mighty and very rich. He had three daughters—Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. Cordelia was the youngest and his favourite child. As Lear was old, he decided to divide his riches among his three daughters.
Now meet : Lear, Goneril, Regan, Cordelia, Lear’s friend Kent and Lear’s nephew.
Scene 1
Lear
My dear daughters, I want to divide my riches among you. The one who loves me most, will get the largest part. Goneril, our eldest-born, speak first.
Goneril
Sir, you are the wisest and the most powerful. I love you more than words can tell, more than all the treasures of the world.
Lear
Thank you, my dear. Take over my company and run it. What about our second daughter, Regan? Speak.
Regan
Sir, you are the best father any child can have. I love you more than my life and my freedom.
Lear
I’m so happy to hear this. I’ll give you my luxurious house. Now, our joy, our dearest Cordelia, what can you say?
Cordelia
Lear
Cordelia
Lear
Nothing will come of nothing: speak again.
Cordelia
I love you no more than a daughter can love her father.
Lear
Leave me! I don’t want to see you ever again.
Author
Lear was very angry. He divided his riches between Goneril and Regan, and Cordelia was given nothing. She left her native land and became the wife of the French businessman who loved her dearly. Lear decided to stay with Goneril first and then with Regan.
Scene 2
Lear
Goneril, I’d like to have one more car and my own driver.
Goneril
Father, you can’t . It’s too expensive. We can’t afford it.
Lear
My daughter! You are so mean and greedy. I’d better go to Regan.
Scene 3
Regan
Oh, my dear father! I wasn’t expecting for your visit so soon. What’s up?
Lear
My beloved Regan! Your sister is so mean and greedy. I don’t want to stay with her.
Regan
But father, I’m not as rich as Goneril, and I can’t invite you to stay at my house. You’d better go back to Goneril.
Scene 4
Lear
Now I have no home and no daughters. I’m so poor and miserable.
Nephew
My dear uncle! How can it be? You are as old as hills but don’t have anything for a rainy day.
Kent
Lear! Don’t be so desperate. I’m sure your youngest daughter Cordelia will help you. She is so affectionate and kind-hearted. She’ll forget and forgive you.
Lear
Now I realize what a fool I was. Goneril and Regan are mean but I believed them. Cordelia is honest and sincere but I punished her.
Scene 5
Kent
Cordelia! I know you are very kind and love your father sincerely. He is so miserable. He has no home.
Cordelia
Oh, my poor father! I won’t leave you in trouble. Where is he?
Kent
Come this way.
Scene 6
Cordelia
My dear father! I have always loved you. Come and live with me.
Lear
You’ll never forgive me.
Cordelia
Please, don’t say so. You are my father and we can’t choose our parents. We love them as they are.
Author
Really, we can’t choose our parents as well as parents can’t choose their children. Our family members are the nearest and dearest people for us. You should always remember “In the time of test family is the best”.
