Helen and Jane collect stamps. They keep their stamps in stamp album. Jane collects stamps with pictures of animals on them. She has got a very good collection and she is proud of it. The stamps can tell about different animals that live on our planet. Helen collects stamps with pictures of flowers on them.

Collecting stamps is very interesting and useful. Looking at them you can learn about different things: countries, people , monuments, etc.

Most stamps show the name of the country they come from British stamps never show the name «Britain» but they always show a picture of Queen Elizabeth. Stamps often show a famous man or woman, or a famous thing or a famous place .For example, the stamps of Kenya show Treetops, a beautiful place in a park for wild animals.

  Different people like doing different things. Different people have different hobbies. A hobby is something you like doing in your free time. Some people like to make models, to collect model cars or other things, to grow flowers or to take photos, to paint or to write poems.

One of the most popular hobbies is collecting. People collect different things: pictures, toys, toy soldiers, model ships and planes, books, dolls, pencils and many other things. But collecting things is not the only hobby people have. Some people are fond of travelling or gardening.

                            At the map of Ukraine

Ukraine is an independent state. In the west Ukraine borders on Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. It also borders on Russia, Byelorus and Moldova .In the north of Ukraine there are forests, in the west-the Carpathian mountains, in the eastern and central Ukraine-black- soil steppelands. In the south Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

It is  the land of woods, lakes, rivers. The major rivers of Ukraine are the Dnieper River, the Dniester, the Bug and the Donets.

The main minerals are iron manganese, lead-and zink and titanium ores and coal.

Ukraine is a producer of sugar beets and sunflower seeds, potatoes and other vegetables. The geographical position of Ukraine is very favourable for the development of its industry and agriculture.

After the declaration of independence, the blue-and-yellow flag was adopted as the national flag of Ukraine by an Act of Parliament on the 28th of January, 1992.

 

  The trident is an ancient symbol of the Ukrainian people, dating back to more than 1000 years B.C. In the 10th century it became the coat of arms of the Kyivan princes, including Volodymyr the great and Yaroslav the Wise.

The trident and the blue- and-yellow flag have served for many generations as the symbols of Ukrainian struggle for independence.

By an Act of Parliament on the 19th of February, 1992, the trident once again became the national emblem of Ukraine, symbolizing the united historical development of the Ukrainian people.

                  My Latest Holidays

I’d like to tell you about my last summer holidays. I spent them I the Crimea. All our family discussed our plans for summer holidays. We decided to go to Sevastopol. We agreed that it was a wonderful idea. So time flied quickly, and one summer day our family started on our journey to Sevastopol. We got there by train and at last I had an excellent opportunity to go round the city to see places of interest. You know, there are a lot of historical monuments in this city and besides, a wonderful seashore. We enjoyed our staying in Sevastopol. Then we decided to visit our relatives in Odesa.

We enjoyed our trip from Sevastopol to Odesa veru much. The Black Sea was calm. We enjoyed sitting on deck in the lounge chairs. While staying in Odesa we went boating and swimming and lay in the sun on the beach. In the evening we went for a walk or went to a café to have an ice-cream or juice. My father showed me beautiful monuments to famous people who lived in Odesa, museums and Odesa Opera House. We managed toget the tickets for a wonderful performance and it deeply impressed us.

The weather was fine and warm. When it was time to go home, we were sorry to leave the city.

Sending greeting cards is one of the British traditions. They are very popular in Britain. The most common cards are birthday cards, congratulation cards and cards for special days.

Birthday cards. There are special family birthday cards for mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. There are cards which are special for friends, teachers and other people.

Congratulation cards. These greeting cards are used for such things as the birth of baby, a wedding or an anniversary. You can even buy a congratulations card for a person who gets a new house or a new job!

Special occasion cards are sent to family and friends on some of the special days during the year. These special days are: Christmas, St Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween. It is a custom for young children to give valentines to each other in their classes at school. Teenagers and grownups sometimes send valentines to their to their girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands or wives.

                               Tristan and Isolda

King Mark of Cornwall had a court at Castle Dore in the 16th century. One day the king picked up a long golden hair dropped by a swallow and said he would marry only the girl to whom the hair belonged. He asked his nephew Tristan to find the girl. Tristan discovered the girl in Ireland. She was Isolda-the beautiful daughter of the Irish king. Tristan, took her back to Cornwall with him, but during the journey they drank a love portion intended for King Mark’s wedding and fell  passionately in love. Tristan married a Breton girl but never stopped to love Isolda.
