LESSON PLAN

 

Lesson aim: to talk about famous people;

Objectives: - to develop reading and speaking skills on the topic «Biographies of famous people».

- to practise using Past Simple;

- to teach to describe painting and how students feel about the pieces of art;

- to encourage to work in pairs and groups;

- to arouse the students’ interest in art and famous artists;

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the lesson the students are expected:

- to be able to ask and answer questions in Past Simple about the artists’ lives and work;

- to be able to make comparison / to identify similarities and differences in biographies of the artists;

- to have practised scanning reading of a biography text;

- to have practised using new vocabulary (regular and irregular verbs)

 Teaching aids and materials: Course book « Solutions Elementary» 2-nd edition (OUP) by Tim Falla, Paul A Davies, pictures of some paintings by Kateryna Bilokur and Mariya Pryimachenko;

I. Lead in /Warming up.

Describing the paintings 1-6 (see Appendix 1).

II. Main part.

- Pairing

(Students get cards of two shapes (e.g. triangles and squares) and of different colours) Students make pairs according to the colour. 

  1. Problem-solving activity.

Which paintings are by Pablo Picasso and which ones are by Vincent Van Gogh?

- asks the students to read the third paragraphs of both texts (see Appendix 2)

- checking the students’ ideas.

- look through the paragraphs to find the sentences which confirm who were the paintings written by;

2. Reading the texts “Pablo Picasso” and “Vincent Van Gogh”

a) Pre-Reading Activity.

-Do you know anything about the artists and their lives?

-Presentation. New vocabulary

Gr2 –about Vincent van Gogh;

- answer the questions;

- complete one part of the table with information about the artist, whose biography they are reading;

- pairs the students (one student from each group, the same colour);

- gives instructions to swap information about the artists;

 Look up a biography of one of the Ukrainian artists on the Internet and write a short text about their life and work. (Answer as many questions as you can from exercise 4 p.73 SB);
