Lesson №

 

Topic: «Sport in English-speaking Countries»

Educational aim: to repeat and intensify lexical material of topic, to expand students’ knowledge about sports in the USA and UK;

Practical aim: to improve skills of speaking and reading;

Developmental aim: to develop grammar skills and logical thinking of pupils;

Cultural aim: to cultivate the right attitude to sport and general culture of students.

Equipment: exercise-books, cards with tasks, text «Unusual Kinds of Sport», didactical material.

 

Course of the lesson

 

I. Introduction.

 

1. Greeting.

T: How are you? I’m glad to see you. Today we’ll speak about sport and games. We are going to refresh your knowledge of the names of sports. You'll be able to make up dialogues and discuss about the role of sport in our life.

 

2. Phonetic drills.

T: There is a Latin phrase «Menssana in corporesano» which expresses the fact that when your body is fit then your mind will be too. In English ‒ «A sound mind in a sound body». Let’s read this proverb with different intonation (sadly, loudly, slowly, quickly, merrily)

 

3. Warming-up. Exercise «Microphone»

T: Is sport important in our life?

Why should we go in for sport?

How does the sport help us in everyday life?

So we may say that sport is one of the things that makes people kin. Try to take part in some sport and you’ll feel much healthier and happier person. Whatever type of person you are there is sport which will suit you and there are a lot of different ones to choose from. Let’s remember them. Look at the cloud of words, choose and write as many words about sport as you can.

 

II. Main part of the lesson.

 

1. Check on home task.

Students hand-in their compositions and projects about their favourite kind of sport.

 

2. Dialogical speaking.

T: Now we’ll have a pair work. I’ll give you cards with phrases. Your task will be to make dialogue with them. Then you’ll act this dialogue.

Dialogue.

Dan: Do you like sports?

Bob: Yes, I do.

Dan: What sports do you go in for?

Bob: I go in for hockey in winter and football in summer. And what about you?

Dan: I like skating in winter and volleyball and tennis in summer.

Bob: Can you play tennis well?

Dan: Yes, I can. And what sport game can you play well?

Bob: I think I can play hockey well. I want to be a sportsman.

Dan: Oh, that’s fine.

 

3. Reading.

3.1. Pre-reading.

T: Sports are popular all over the world. We like discussing them. We have spoken about traditional kinds of sports. But many unusual sports are popular nowadays – hang-gliding, parachuting, bungee-jumping, very unusual – bed racing, extreme ironing etc. To go in for sport we need some equipment. Let’s revise these words.

 

New words:

Substitutes ‒ запасні.

Alternate ‒ альтернативний.

Make smb unconscious ‒ позбавити когось свідомості.

Achieve checkmate ‒ поставити мат.

3.2. While-reading.

T: Now you’ll read text «Unusual kinds of sport». Match the texts with their translations.

 

Unusual Kinds of Sport

 


1. Octopus (восьминіг)

This is a sport where two teams try to hit a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into a goal. There are six players playing for each team at a time, as well as four substitutes. To play you need a diving mask, snorkel, cap, stick and puck.

 

2. Ultimate Frisbee (фрісбі)

This is a sport played a flying disk. The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to the player in the opposition’s end zone. You can’t run with the disk. There are usually seven players on each team. To play you need a disc.

3. Chess boxing (шахобокс)

This combines two sports, with eleven alternate rounds. You can win either by hitting your opponent to make him unconscious or to achieve checkmate. This is an individual sport. You need to be good at both sports to win. You need gloves and a chess board.

 Це об’єднує два види спорту, з одинадцяти альтернативних раундів. Ви можете виграти або за допомогою удару по Вашому супротивнику, що позбавить його свідомості, або поставити йому мат. Це індивідуальний спорт. Ви повинні добре володіти обома видами спорту щоб виграти. Вам потрібні рукавички і шахова дошка.

Це спорт, де дві команди намагаються забити шайбу в нижній частині басейну в ціль. Є шість гравців, що грають за кожну команду одночасно, а також чотири запасних. Для гри вам потрібен маска для дайвінгу, трубка, шапка, ключка і шайба.

Цей спорт грається за допомогою літаючого диска. Ціль гри полягає в тому, щоб набрати очки, шляхом передачі диску за допомогою пасу гравцю своєї команди, який находиться в кінці зони суперника. Ви не можете бігти з диском. Як правило, є сім гравців у кожній команді. Для гри вам знадобиться диск.

T: And now let’s read a text about American football.

American Football

Sport in the USA is very noisy and colourful. Football is one of the major sports in the USA. In Britain and elsewhere the game is often called American football to distinguish it from soccer. American football developed from the games of football and rugby. The game is played by two teams of 11 players each. The ball is oval shaped and sometimes called a pigskin because the balls were formed made from pig’s skin.

The National Football league has 30 professional teams. Six teams in the American Football Conference and six in National Football League which play against each other to decide the two that will meet in the Super Bowl.

Американський футбол

Спорт в США є дуже шумним і барвистим. Футбол є одним з основних видів спорту в США. У Великобританії та інших країнах гру часто називають «американський футбол», щоб відрізнити його від футболу. Американський футбол розвинувся з таких ігор як футбол і регбі. У цю гру грали дві команди по 11 гравців у кожній. М’яч ‒ овальної форми, якого іноді називають «свиняча шкіра», тому що м’ячі були сформовані та зроблені зі шкіри свині.

Національної футбольна ліга має 30 професійних команд. Шість команд в американській футбольній конференції і шість в Національній футбольній лізі, грають один проти одного, щоб визначити дві, які зустрінуться в Суперкубку.

T: Let’s think about advantages and disadvantages of sport. Devide the following statements into two categories: advantages and disadvantages of sport.

We can hurt ourselves doing some kind of physical exercises.

All sports and physical exercises are very useful.

Going in for sports is dangerous.

It teaches us to win and to lose.

It is different to combine going in for sports and studies.

Sports can make us nervous.

Sports prevent us from diseases.

Sports develop strength.

We should buy some special equipment.

Going in for sports takes too much time.

Sports develop a personality.

III. Final part of lesson.

 

1. Home task.

T: At home you will write short composition about your attitude to sport. You should mention different kinds of sports, sports clubs at school etc.

2. Summarizing.
