Past simple - Past progressive

Time expressions : yesterday, three days ago, last year, in 1991
Affirmative: I, you, we, they, she, he, it -
V2(ed)
Negative: I,you, she, he - didn’t - V1
Interrogative: Did - you, we, she, he - V1?

Jane gave the gift to her cousin yesterday.
Jane didn’t give the gift to her cousin yesterday.
Did Jane give the gift to her cousin yesterday?
Past Progressive
Time expressions: when, while, at that moment, yesterday at 6 o’clock
Affirmative: I, She, He, It , we- was/were + Ving
Negative: I, She/we - was not/ were not +Ving
Interrogative: Was/Were - she/ they +Ving?
Past progressive
I was walking when the rain started.
She was not cooking when the mother came
Were they playing football while we were watching the movie?
We use Past Progressive
for actions that were happening at a specific point of time in the past
E.g. I was watching TV at six oclock yesterday evening
To set the scene in a story:
E.g. Jill was walking in the forest and it was raining
for actions that were happening at the same time in the past.
E.g. While I was watching TV, my mum was cooking.

We use past simple and progressive in the same sentence whe one action interrupted another in the past We use as soon as with past simple: As soon as they left, we started cleaning up the house
