Saint Nicholas Day. Saint Nicholas Day is a special day in many countries. It is celebrated on December 6th. Saint Nicholas was a kind and generous man who lived long ago. He loved to help people, especially children. On Saint Nicholas Day, children leave their shoes out at night. In the morning, they find them filled with small gifts, like candy, nuts and even toys. Saint Nicholas visits children at night and leave these presents. Children also write letters to Saint Nicholas, telling him about their good deeds and asking for presents. Saint Nicholas: The Kind and Generous Saint. Long, long ago, there lived a very kind and generous man named Nicholas. He was a bishop who loved helping others, especially children. One Christmas Eve, Nicholas heard about a poor family with three daughters. Their father was too poor to give them dowries, which were needed to find husbands. Without dowries, the girls would not be able to marry. Nicholas didn't want the girls to suffer, so he decided to help. One night, he climbed onto the roof of their house and slipped three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The coins landed in the girls' stockings, which were drying by the fireplace. The next morning, the girls woke up to find the gold coins. They were very happy and were able to marry.
