*Arthur Conan Doyle was born in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. *Arthur's mother was a very good story-teller and her fantastic stories he remembered all his life. *The talent of story-telling Arthur inherited from his mother and it helped him as a writer. *After finishing school Conan Doyle became a student of the medical faculty in the University of Edinburgh.
*In 1887, he published his first detective story "A Study in Scarlet". Its main characters were Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and they became the most popular characters of a great many of Conan Doyle's stories. *Besides detective stories, Conan Doyle also wrote historical novels, war books. *His two fantastic stories “The Lost World” (1912) and “The Poisoned Belt” (1913) were quite successful. *He died in 1930.
Mark Twain (his real name is Samuel Clemens) is the most outstanding American Author of the second of the 19-th century which is marked by the growing of realistic tendencies in American literature. Mark Twain‘s boyhood was spent on the Mississippi River. He told about it in the book “The adventures of Tom Sawyer”. When he was 12 his father died and the boy had to earn his own living. He was 27 when his first sketches and stories began to appear under his pen-name Mark Twain.
Charlotte Brontё (1816-1855) An English novelist of the 19-th Century. She was the daughter of a poor clergyman. There were 6 children in the family, 5 boys and a boy. Their mother died when Charlotte was a very small child. The girls were sent to a charity-school which Charlotte described later in her novel “Jane Eyre“. In her best novel “Jane Eyre“ Charlotte tells the readers the story of a poor governess. She gave much attention in the novel to the problems of education.
Robert Burns is the world famous Scottish poet. He was born in the south of Scotland. The family was quite poor but hard working, honest and proud. He liked to say: “An honest man's the noblest work of God”. Being a famous poet Burns was quite poor. Robert Burns was 27 when his first book of poems was published. He was only 37 years old, he died of heart disease on the 21-st of July, 1796 .Robert Burns was a great son of the Scottish people.
Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) A well-known English writer, was born in Dublin and there he received his education. He spent the greater part of his life in Ireland and saw the hard life of people there. In his articles he attacked the English government. “Gulliver‘s Travels” is his famous book. When it first appeared, it was read with great pleasure by many people. It is translated into many languages, and people of all ages like it.
George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron, later George Gordon Noel, 6th Baron Byron, FRS(22 January 1788 – 19 April 1824), commonly known simply as Lord Byron, was an English poetand a leading figure in the Romantic movement. Among Byron's best-known works are the lengthy narrative poems Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and the short lyric She Walks in Beauty. Byron is regarded as one of the greatest British poets, and remains widely read and influential.
Robert Luis Stevenson Was born in 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The boy was often ill and during the cold winter stayed in the house. He had no brothers no sisters. Books were his only friends. Robert read a lot. He thought about other countries and drew maps of different places which he wanted to see. The boy wrote stories of adventures on the sea and told those stories to his parents. In 1883 R. L. Stevenson published his book “ Treasure Island“. In 1886 another book “Kidnapped“ appeared, and then other books of adventures came out. Readers liked the book very much. He wrote many good books and become famous, but he was very ill and in 1894 he died.
