LVIVLviv, the biggest city in Western Ukraine, was founded as a fort in the middle of the 13th century by Prince Danylo Halytsky . The first mention of Lviv in early chronicles is from 1256, although archaeological excavation in 1993 found the first settlements of the 6th century here.

Lviv quickly became the centre of trade and commerce of the region. The city's favourable location on the crossroads of trade routes led to its rapid economic development. Construction, trade, transport and industry started to develop rapidly until the First World War began.

Towards the end of the 19th century Lviv became the centre of the Ukrainian national movement. Many prominent cultural and political leaders lived in Lviv, among them Ivan Franko and Mykhailo Hrushevsky; the city was a meeting place of Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish cultures.

Now Lviv is a major economic and cultural centre in the Western region of independent Ukrainian state. The oldest monument in Lviv consists of the foundation and walls of St. Nickolas's Church, built by Prince Lev Danylovych in the 13th century. The remnants of Vysoky Zamok date back to the 13th century. There is a great number of the medieval churches built in the Byzantine style in Lviv.

Lviv is the only city in Ukraine that still has some original Renaissance architecture. Lviv’s open-air Museum of Popular Architecture and Life is worth visiting. About 100 old wooden buildings are divided into many ethnographic groups of Western Ukraine. Many tourists visit Market place and admire high but narrow buildings.(To have additional windows required a special permission of the king).

Lviv is also famous for its churches and monasteries, among which are the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Uspensky Church, St George’s Cathedral, Church of St John the Baptist, Jesuit Church and many others. Inside the Town Arsenal there is the Museum of Old Arms, with a display of various arms taken from over 30 countries.

Despite tremendous difficulties, economic reforms proceed in Lviv more rapidly than in many other cities. In 2012 it was a host city of the European Cup. Its nickname is Small Paris.
