Native Americans Eskimo People

Home. The Eskimos are the most widely dispersed group in the world still leading a partly aboriginal way of life. For thousands of years, small groups of people have lived in Alaska, Canada, Greenland and Siberia. The most well-known Eskimos are the Inuit. The word "Inuit" means "real people". The word "Eskimo" is an Indian word which means "eaters of raw meat".

Land. The Inuit people have lived in the Artic area for thousands of years. Today they live in the cold areas of Alaska, Canada and Greenland.

Clothes. Only fur clothing was warm enough in such a cold place. The Inuit make their clothes of animal skin. Caribou skin make the best clothes because they are warm and light. Eskimos wear shirts, coats, pants, socks and shoes or boots. They wear two layers of clothes, The inner layer of fur against the skin and the outer layer of fur facing out. Boots and shoes are made of seal skin because it is waterproof. The hooded coat is called the parka. Snow goggles are used to protect their eyes from the glaring snow.

Appearance. Inuit people have got light brown skin, straight black hair, dark eyes and wide faces with high cheek bones. They look like people who live in Northern Asia.

Food. The Inuit people hunt for their food. They eat fish, sea mammals, for example seals and walruses, and a few land mammals. Caribou is a wild reindeer. They hunt caribou for food, as well as for their skins for clothing and antlers for tools.

Houses. Eskimos do not live in igloos made of snow, as most people think. Ice houses are built only as temporary shelters during winter hunting trips. The Igloo is made from blocks of snow and it has got a hole in the top for a chimney. Permanent homes are usually built of wood, whalebone and covered with seal skins and earth. Seal oil is burned for warmth and light. During the short summers, they live in tents made of animal skins.

. They believed that all things had a form of spirit or soul. These spirits were held to persist after death. The spirit of the dead can be placated by obedience to custom, avoiding taboos , performing the right rituals. They didn’t worship anything, but they feared much. Religion

Way of life. Men and women do different things. Men are hunters and home builders. They also make tools and weapons. Women cook and make clothes. They also make skin shoes for the dogs to keep their feet from cold. Eskimos are generally warm and gentle people. Families usually live together in peaceful harmony.
