History. Kiev the capital of Ukraine, is more than 1525 years old. It is one of the oldest cities of Eastern Europe. A garden city, a city of museums, Kiev is the historic, political, religious, scientific and cultural centre of Ukraine. It is also the largest city in the country, and one of the largest industrial centres. According to the chronicles, the founders of Kiev were the brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoriv. The city was named after the eldest, Kyi. The memory of the other two brothers has been preserved the names of hills and streets.

Tourism Thousands of people from Ukraine and abroad come to Kiev each year. Among them are scientists, who visit the National Scientific Library (over 10 million volumes), the national Parliamentary Library, Medical, Agricultural, Technical and many other libraries in Kiev. Those, who are interested in cultural life of the city, may choose among 41 Kiev theatres. The most famous of them are: the National Opera, Ukrainian Drama Theatre, and Operetta Theatre, House of Organ and Chamber Music and others. If you are interested in history, you may visit the Historical Museum, Museum of Ukraine’s Literature, Western and Eastern Art Museum, Museum of Kiev’s History and many other museums in Kiev. If you walk along the streets of the city, you will notice numerous monuments. Among them could be monuments to Taras Shevchenko, Bohdan Khmelnitsky, Lesya Ukrainka and many others.

Modern city. Kiev is one of the biggest, and the most beautiful European cities. The population of the city is about 3 million people. It is also the main administrative, political, cultural and scientific centre of the country. Kiev is situated on both banks of the Dnieper. It is one of the largest and most beautiful rivers in Europe. Kiev has a well-developed industry. There are many factories in Kiev. They make different products. In Kiev there are many museums, monuments, theatres, cinemas, libraries and palaces. Thousands of students study at Kiev-Mohila academy, at Kiev University, many institutes and colleges. Kiev is a large transport centre. Kiev metro is very beautiful.

Science and education. Kiev is also one of the largest scientific centres. Here the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences is located. Its research institutes are famous for their discoveries. Thousands of young people come to the capital each year in order to become students of the famous Kiev Shevchenko National University and other higher educational establishments of the city.

Nature Kiev is situated on the banks of the river Dnieper. The city is very green. It is one of the most beautiful cities of Ukraine. Kiev is often called a garden city. Thousands of tourists come to see its beauty each year. It is very beautiful in spring, when the trees are in blossom and the streets and parks of the city look very attractive. But most of the people come to Kiev to see the beauty of the Dnieper and numerous parks of the capital, and get acquainted with unique Ukrainian culture and character.

Khreschatyk Khreschatyk is the main street in Kiev. It is not very long, but it is wide and straight. You can see many cars and trolley buses on Khreschatyk. There are many big green trees in it. A lot of people go to Khreschatyk every day. Some of them go shopping because there are many good shops and big market there. Other people go to the cinema, look at the fountains or sit on the benches. In the evening many people walk in Khreschatyk. There you can see many bright lights. People like the main street of Kiev because it is nice and green.
