Підготувала вчитель англійської мови Купрата Оксана Богданівна. Аляска – це найбільший штат у США, де дуже холодно і багато природи. Там є високі гори, великі льодовики та різні тварини, наприклад, ведмеді, лосі й орли. Зараз Аляска відома своєю нафтою, риболовлею і красивими місцями, куди приїжджають туристи. У цьому матеріалі ми дізнаємося більше про цей цікавий край.

Where Is Alaska?Alaska is a state belonging to the United States in North America. It is the largest state in the United States and is over the size of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France combined!

Climate. South and South-East  The southern areas have average summer temperatures of 4 to 16°C and winter temperatures of −7 to 4°C. Interior Away from the coasts, the average summer temperatures are between 7 to 24°C and winter temperatures are −7 to −23°C. However, temperatures can reach up to 34°C in summer and as low as −54°C in winter!Alaska is known for its very cold temperatures. Much of the state is covered in a layer of permafrost (permanently frozen soil).

Climate. Northern Coast Average summer temperatures of 2 to 13°C and winter temperatures of −21 to −29°C. Islands and Bering Sea Coast  Around the islands and the west coast, average summer temperatures are around 4 to 16°C and winter temperatures around −12 to −7°C.

Capital City. Alaska’s capital is called Juneau. It is located in the south of the state and shares a border with British Columbia in Canada. It became the capital of Alaska in 1906. The city is named after Joseph Juneau, who discovered gold nearby.

Capital City. Juneau can only be reached by water or by air because the terrain is rough and there are no roads linking the capital to any other city. There is a ferry system which connects Juneau with 12 other cities in southeast Alaska. Juneau is one of the largest cities in the USA by land area, but only has a population of around 31,000 people. It is the least densely populated of any US state capital.

Landmarks. Rivers and Lakes. Alaska has over 12,000 rivers and 3 million lakes. The Yukon river is extremely long with almost 2000 miles of its 3185 mile length (5126km) in Alaska. Glaciers. Alaska is home to thousands of glaciers, including the Bering glacier which is the largest one in North America. Volcanoes. There are more than 130 volcanoes in Alaska. Several have erupted in the last few years.

Landmarks. Mountain Ranges Alaska is home to thousands of mountains. The biggest is Denali, which is the highest point in North America at approximately 6190 metres (20,300ft) tall. Most of the United States' tallest mountains are found in Alaska. Rainforests You might not expect it, but south-east Alaska is home to millions of acres of temperate rainforest!

Wildlife. With such varied habitats, Alaska is home to a wide range of animals including: Bears - You can find black bears, brown bears and grizzly bears and occasionally polar bears. Moose - They live in forested areas, often close to lakes. Wolves - They can be found across Alaska’s mainland and many of the islands.

Wildlife. Bald Eagles - Alaska is home to the largest population of bald eagles in the United States. Whales - Humpback, orca, fin and grey whales are all commonly spotted off Alaska’s coasts.
