Edinburgh is often called "a city on a volcano". The city is built around an old volcano called Castle Rock. On top of this rock stands
Edinburgh Castle. Castle Rock was formed 350 million years ago. It is very old. Today, the volcano is extinct. It will never erupt again. The castle looks strong and powerful on the high rock. You can see the castle from almost everywhere in the city. This is why Edinburgh is one of the most unique cities in the world.

Scotland is a country in the north of the

Forth — that is a large river estuary. The city has about 500,000 people. It is the second largest city in Scotland after Glasgow. Edinburgh is famous for its hills, green spaces, and old buildings. Many tourists visit Edinburgh every year.
Edinburgh has two main parts: the Old Town and the New Town.
The Old Town is very old. It has narrow streets and old stone buildings. One famous street in the Old Town is the Royal Mile. It goes from the castle to the palace. The New Town is not very
new. It was built in the 18th century, about 250 years ago. The
New Town has wide streets and neat buildings in a special style called Georgian. Both parts are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

have a wonderful view of the whole city and the sea.

Edinburgh has many interesting facts.
First, the national animal of Scotland is a unicorn. You can see many statues of unicorns in Edinburgh. Unicorns are a symbol of purity and power.
Second, Edinburgh is the birthplace of Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter books in Edinburgh. She wrote in cafes around the city. A school called George Heriot's School looks like Hogwarts. Many places in Edinburgh inspired her.
Third, Edinburgh Zoo has a famous penguin. His name is Sir Nils Olav. He is a king penguin. He has a title of knight and he is a colonel in the Norwegian Guard. This is a real story.
Fourth, the main train station is called Waverley Station. It is the only train station in the world named after a novel. The novel is "Waverley" by Walter Scott.
Edinburgh is famous for its festivals. The most famous one is the Edinburgh Festival
Fringe. It happens every August. It is the biggest arts festival in the world.
Thousands of artists come to the city. They perform theatre, comedy, music, and
dance. You can see shows on the streets, in parks, and in small rooms. The city
becomes very busy and full of energy.
Many tourists visit Edinburgh in August just for the festival. There is also a military
festival called the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Soldiers play bagpipes and march at the castle.
