Ukrainian traditions Christmas is one of the main Christian holidays, which is distinguished by unique customs and traditions. In Ukraine, the traditions of celebrating Christmas have been passed down from generation to generation. Christmas is preceded by a forty-day fast, on January 6, with the appearance of the first star, Ukrainians sit down to a generous but fasting table. It is customary to spend the holy evening in the circle of the whole family.
The table is covered with straw, and the floor of the house is covered with hay. The table is covered with a tablecloth, under which garlic is placed in the corners of the table. Garlic protects the family from diseases and evil forces. On Christmas Eve, a sheaf of rye or oats is brought to the house, which symbolizes the well-being of the family.
Traditional Christmas meals. The Holy Supper, on January 6, on the eve of Christmas, gathers the whole large family at the table. On this evening, 12 fasting dishes are put on the table. According to the ancient Ukrainian folk tradition, the Holy Supper begins when the first star rises in the sky. After the prayer, the Supper begins, after which everyone goes to the Church for the Divine Service.
