Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. Welcome dear friends, pupils and our guests. I am very glad to see you today. Our party is devoted to the most interesting, the most important, the most beautiful, and of course, the most favourite holiday among all people all over the world - Christmas! I congratulate you on this holiday and I wish you Merry Christmas! I wish you to be always happy, healthy, wealthy and wise! New Year in Ukraine The New Year’s Day is celebrated in Ukraine on the first of January. In the evening on the thirty-first of December Ukrainian families get together to welcome the New Year. They decorate New Year’s Tree, put presents under it for all members of the family. Mothers prepare lots of tasty food for festive table. It is a warm family holiday. Ukrainians like to stay home on this day. Ukrainian schoolchildren have New Year’s parties at schools. They sing songs and dance around the New Year’s Tree. Father Frost comes and gives them presents. Children are happy, after New Year’s parties their winter holidays begin. People send postcards to the relatives and friends to wish them a Happy New Year and Merry Christmas.

New Year in England New Year in England is not as widely celebrated as Christmas. The English people usually decorate the New Year tree, too. English people like to stay at home on New Year’s Day. On this day mothers prepare tasty things and a nice cake. They have a Father Frost, too. They call him Santa Claus. He brings presents to all children. They like to get many sweets, toys and books. At New Year a lot of people have a party to “see the new year in”. At midnight the radio or TV is turned on and everyone can hear the chimes of Big Ben. Usually people send postcards to the relatives and friends to wish them a Happy New Year.

“Greeting cards ”. Teacher: In Great Britain there is a tradition to congratulate relatives, friends, colleges on Christmas. Usually people buy a lot of different greeting cards with Christmas symbols. We have two greeting cards. I’ll give them to you and you are to write a congratulation to your friends on Christmas. Then you are to cut your cards into 10 sections and put them into the envelope and send to the other team. It’s the first part of our contest. Are you ready? Start! Christmas in Ukraine Ukrainian people celebrate Christmas on the seventh of January. The evening before Christmas (January sixth) is called the Holy Evening. At this time all the families get together for the Holy Supper. There are twelve different dishes on the table. A traditional dish is “kutya”. On Christmas people go to church and sing Christmas songs which glorify Christ’s birthday. Christmas is one of the most favorite holidays of the year in Ukraine.

Christmas in England Christmas Day is a happy holiday for a lot of people in different countries. Every year there is a very big Christmas Tree in the centre of London, in Trafalgar Square. This Tree is a present to Great Britain from Norway. People of Norway send it to Londoners every year. Before Christmas people buy presents and a lot of food and drink for their parties. On Christmas morning people open their presents and say 'thanks' to their members of family and friends. The Queen's speech is on TV at 3.00 p.m. On Christmas people wish a merry Christmas to each other. They eat Christmas turkey, potatoes and green vegetables for Christmas Dinner. And they have the Christmas pudding for the dessert. They like to have a Christmas cake for tea at five o'clock. After Christmas comes Boxing Day. On this day people usually visit their relatives and friends.
