The European Union is a unique partnership between 27 European countries, known as Member States, or EU countries. Together they cover much of the European continent. The EU is home to around 447 million people, which is around 6 % of the world's population. Citizens of the EU countries are also EU citizens.

The EU countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Republic of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden

Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022 and was granted EU candidate status in June 2022. The Council will decide on further steps once Ukraine fulfils the conditions outlined in the European Commission's opinion on its EU membership application.

Europe Day What is Europe Day?Europe Day is a day marked in the calendar to celebrate peace and unity throughout Europe every 9th May. Europe Day marks the anniversary of a speech given by French foreign minister Robert Schuman in 1950. Schuman envisaged Europe free from war and founded on the ideals of cooperation and sharing resources. This 'Schuman declaration' is widely considered to be the basis for our modern-day European Union.
