The UK: Geographical Position and Climate

The full name of the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and a great number of small islands (about 5,500).

The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. Northern Ireland occupies one third of the island of Ireland. It borders on the Irish Republic in the south. 

The island of Great Britain consists of three main parts: England (in the southeast of Great Britain), Wales (a mountainous peninsula in the southwest of it),Scotland (in the northern part of the island). 

There are no high mountains in Great Britain. In the north the Cheviots separate England from Scotland, the Pennines stretch down North England along its middle, the Cambrian mountains occupy the greater part of Wales and the Highlands of Scotland are the tallest of the British mountains. There is very little flat country except the region known as the East Anglia

The UK's rivers are not very long. The Thames is one of the most important rivers in the UK. It flows into the North Sea. It’s the second longest river, it’s length is 215 miles (346 km), but it is the deepest river of the UK. The longest river in the UK is the Severn, just 220 miles (354 km) in length. It begins in Wales and enters the Atlantic Ocean near Bristol in England.

According to the 2011 UK Census, the total population of the United Kingdom was around 63,182,000. The 2011 census recorded the population of England as 53,0 million, Scotland as 5,3 million, Wales as 3,1 million, and Northern Ireland as 1,8 million. The main nationalities are: English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish. The current population is about 68 million people.  

The capital of the country is London. The official language is English but it is not the only native official language. You may also occasionally hear: Welsh in Wales; Scottish Gaelic and Scots in Scotland; Irish and Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland.

The Union Flag, or Union Jack, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. It is so called because it combines the crosses of the three countries united under one Sovereign - the kingdoms of England and Wales, of Scotland and of Ireland (although since 1921 only Northern Ireland has been a part of the United Kingdom). The UK is a constitutional monarchy (with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state) and a parliamentary democracy (with parliament as the legislative organ). The UK does not have a written constitution. The constitution is made up of common law, statute law and conventions, and may be changed by a simple act of parliament without any special procedure or majority.

The Gulf Stream (a warm current of the Atlantic Ocean) influences the climate of the UK. Thanks to it the climate is mild. It means that the weather is mainly foggy and rainy. Winters are not very cold and summers are rarely hot.
