Topic: Mass Media

Тема: Засоби масової інформації

Objectives: to develop pupils’ skills of using new lexical material;

                    To improve speaking  and reading skills;

                    To develop a speech reaction of students;

                    To enlarge student’s knowledge on the theme;

                   To bring up a tolerant attitude to the literary preferences of other people.

 

Мета: формувати навички вживання нових лексичних одиниць;

          Удосконалювати навички усного мовлення й читання;

          Розвивати мовну здогадку й мовленнєву реакцію учнів;

          Розширити знання учнів з даної теми;

          Виховувати толерантне ставлення до літературних уподобань інших людей.

Equipment: PB (Karpiuk), HO, Presentation.

 

Procedure

  1. 1. Greeting.

2. Today we begin to learn the new topic. You’ll guess what will we speak about.

And at first let’s check on your homework. – Ex.9,p.177. P1-P2

3. check on H/w.

4. Warming up.

- I’ll tell you some words. Think what association you will have:

chat show, documentary, newspaper, tabloid, quality paper, popular newspaper, local newspaper, magazine, social media,

web page, blog, chat room, text message updates.

  • So, who knows what will we speak about? (if children don’t understand – show them a diagram).  Slide 2

Today we have a new theme “Mass Media”. What is mass media? (it is a number of means of communication, which help people to communicate, find, get and keep information.) Slide 4

Making a Report”

We have interviewed some persons of the ages 14 (15)  about mass media.

 The conclusion: the most popular mass media with the people of ages 14 (15) is…,

the least popular is….

 isn’t useful at all.

2. The results are the following:

  • So, children, let’s make groups, make your notes, make the survey and make your reports.

Children are divided into several groups.

Two pupils make their own survey with the older generation teacher and guests ( if they present).  Their  report starts: We have interviewed some persons of the older generation about mass media.

 

3. Writing.

- You are well done. Now let’s discuss advantages and disadvantages of two most popular mass media for each group. They are the Press and the Internet. Look through your notes and fill in the table with advantages and disadvantages of your mass media. And, of course, I want to help you, and give you the information about advantages and disadvantages of  television.

Task 1: Read the text and answer the questions.

Mass media

            Mass media includes all the “tools” we have for communicating with large numbers of people… televisions, radio, films, on-line services, magazines and newspapers. All carry messages that reach masses of people in contrast to letters, telephone calls and one-to-one conversations known interpersonal media. The mass media refers to the people and organizations that provide news and Information for the public. So far, these were mainly newspapers, television, and radio. Today computers play a very big role. The Internet is a computer system that lets people receive and exchange information about anything. Ordinary post has been taken over by e-mail which stands for electronic mail because it is sent and received via a computer. It allows people to send messages to each other quickly and cheaply. Ordinary post is now called “snail male” and one wonders if the postman’s is a job under the threat of extinction.

Work in pairs. Questions for student A.

  1.         What images come you to mind when you hear the word “media”?
  2.         What is the media?
  3.         Do you think the media have too much power?
  4.         What are the good and the bad things about the media in your country?
  5.         Do you always believe the media?
  6.         How is the today’s media different from that of 30 years ago?

  1.     Would you like to work for the media?
  2.     What do you think of the mass media?
  3.     Why do people hear the media?
  4.     Do you think the media tries to change people’s views?
  5.     Is it a good idea for a country’s media to be controlled by the government?
  6.     Do you trust the media?
