Customs and Traditions of the European countries

Objectives:

  • to develop students’ skills of working with the new information;
  • to expend speaking skills in making summary on the topic;
  • to develop listening skills;
  • to provide students with additional information about customs and traditions of the European countries;
  • to develop students’ creative thinking;
  • to develop imagination, memory, attention;
  • to educate students to respect the customs and traditions of the European countries.


Aids: a computer, a projector, power point presentation, video record, cards

 

PROCEDURE

I. INTRODUCTION

1. Greeting

T: Good afternoon, dear students! How are you? I hope everybody is fine. So let’s start our lesson.

2. Introducing the topic

Today we’ll talk about European countries, their holidays, cultures and traditions. And do it with the help of an interesting game. It will help you to review the material you have studied at your English lessons and I hope you will get to know many new interesting things. The contest consists of 9 tasks. Before starting the game let divide into two teams.

II. WARMING UP

Task 1.  Famous People of Europe.

Task 1 is to guess the name, surname and country of famous person with the help of the explanations on the slides. The winner is the team which guesses more persons than opponents. (1 point for each correct word) 

  1. The Prime Minister who was called “Iron Lady”. (Margaret Thatcher. Great Britain)
  2. Dynamite was invented by this scientist. ( Alfred Nobel. Sweden)
  3. The navigator who landed in the New World in 1492. (Christopher Columbus. Spain)
  4. The composer who couldn’t hear at the end of his life. ( Beethoven. Germany)
  5. The famous ancient doctor who was the founder of modern medicine. (Hippocrates. Greece)

 

Task 2. False facts.

Task 2 is to find two false facts about country among given six. You can see the photo and name of the country on the presentation. The winner is the team which finds more facts than opponents. (1 point for each correct fact) 

  1. Norway: a member of the EU – Vikings – high prices on goods – the northernmost points of Europe – the Residence of Santa Clause – the absolute champion of winter Olympic Games.
  2. Ireland: a member of the EU – the red hair – the part of Great Britain – an island – Leprechaun – Monarchy.
  3. Poland: Slavic origin – a member of NATO – a neighbor of Ukraine – the part of Kievan Rusthe oldest country of Europe – no nuclear power plants.
  4. Spain: bullfighting – Orthodoxy – beautiful seacoasts – Constitutional Monarchy – Iberian Peninsula – the highest taxes in Europe.

 

III. MAIN PART

 

Task 3. Holidays of the European Countries.

 

Task 3 is to match the following names of the holidays on the presentation and their definitions on the cards. You have 5 minutes for this task. The winner is the team which does this task faster and matches more correct holidays. (1 point for each correct holiday).

 

  1. St. Valentine Day                   f) Christmas

  4. Shrove Tuesday                       i) Mother’s Day
  5. Flamenco Fair                          j) Bastille Day

 

  1. This day commemorates the plot to blow up some government building.
  2. It is the annual festival commemorating the birth of the Savior and observed by Orthodox Church on January, 7 and by other Christian churches on December, 25.
  3. This holiday gives children their chance to show their love and respect to their mothers.
  4. On this day people send special cards to somebody they love and also give them symbolic gifts. It is not an official holiday, but usually observed by all romantic people.
  5. This holiday is marked on the evening of preceding All Saints Day and is especially loved by children who on this day enjoy wearing strange costumes and getting treats.
  6. This holiday is the chief Christian feast which celebrates the resurrection of Christ and is held on the first Sunday after the first full moon that comes after the spring equinox.
  7. These are Pre-Lent spring festivities usually accompanied by making and eating pancakes.
  8. This holiday originated as the day of struggle for women’s rights.
  9. This holiday is a commemoration of the Storming of the prison back in 1789. It has turned into a globally-recognized event with Air Force displays, fireworks, parades and festivals.
  10.                     The feast of Saint Matthew is the last big party of the long hot summer. This is combination of cattle fair by day and dancing, drinking and a fair by night.

Task 4. European Countries.

Task 4 is to guess the name of the European country with the help of the photo and description on the presentation. The winner is the team which guesses more countries. (1 point for each correct country).

 

  1.                It is the motherland of antique civilization which was connected with the migration of nations. It is one of the best resort district of Europe. There are good weather conditions, great quantity of islands, picturesquare seacoasts and many ancient places of interest. (Greece)

 

  1.                It is the most visited country in the world. It’s full of love, feelings, romance, fashion and beauty, delicate aroma and spectacular architecture. It is the motherland of ballet, cinema and bicycle. (France)

 

  1.                More than half the area of this country lies below sea level. It is the country of beautiful tulips and many windmills. This country has the highest population density in Europe. (the Netherlands)

 

  1.                This country is famous for its pastries and seafood.  The climate is virtually unchanged from month to month Greenland belongs to this country. The frozen North recalls the time of the Vikings. This rude race sailed a great many seas. (Denmark)

 

  1.                More than half of the world's cultural heritage is preserved in this country - about 60 per cent.  It is the land of many of the most famous artists in the world.  This country has more famous designers than any other country. All active volcanoes in Europe are located there. This country naturally known throughout the world for its pasta and pizza. (Italy)

 

  1.                It is not just a country but a kingdom.  There is a king and queen and castles. In addition, it is the unofficial capital of Europe.  This is where the European Parliament, the European Commission and NATO headquarters are located. This country just doesn't have population migration!  This is due to a very high standard of living.  This country is famous for its chocolate. (Belgium)

 

  1.                This country ranks third in Europe in the concentration of castles in its territory.  In the capital of this country, you will not notice the walls with satellite installations and fiberglass windows, as they can dramatically change the appearance of the streets. The most popular sport is hockey. (The Czech Republic)

 

  1.                About a fourth of the country is located behind the Arctic Circle, and the true northern lights can be seen here even in the southern regions of the country.  This is where Santa Claus lives and has an official address.  There are very high taxes in this country, but it is recognized as the most democratic country with the lowest level of corruption in the world. (Finland)

 

  1.                This country is situated on the islands and consists of four main parts. There are no high mountains and long rivers. This country has a monarch and the parliament which consists of two chambers. That’s why it is parliamentary monarchy. The most popular drink is tea. The national flag of this country has the name. It is the Union Jack. (Great Britain)

 

  1.            This country holds the leading positions of making fairs. It hosts the largest beer festival in the world.  Aspirin was invented here.  The locals make the biggest donations among other Europeans.  It is a country with very high sanitary standards.  The most popular sport is football.  And the national team of this country is one of the strongest national football teams on Earth. (Germany)

 

  1.            The Danube - Europe's largest river, flows through the capital of this country.  The Royal Palace here is a national pride.  The largest thermal lake in Europe is located here.  Traditional dance is a chardash.  Traditional cuisine is famous for delicious goulash soup.  The Rubik's Cube was invented here. (Hungary)

 

Task 5. Grammar. Conditional Sentences II, III.

 

Task 5 is to complete the Second and the Third Conditional sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets. The teams do the task with the Second and the Third Conditional sentences. In 5 minutes teams will change their cards with each other and find a mistake in the sentences if they are in the cards of the opponents. The winner is the team which has more correct sentences. (1 point for each correct sentence)

Task 6. Inventions of the European Countries.

Task 6 is to match the invention and country where it was invented. Each group has the two sets of stripes. The first set includes the name of inventions and the second set has the name of country where they were appeared. You have 5 minutes for this task. The winner is the team which finds more correct combinations. (1 point for each correct combination)

Toothpaste was invented                                     by the Romans in 960.

The rubber tire was invented                               by Irish inventor John Dunlop.

The first trainers were designed                          by brothers Dessler from Germany.

The first guitar was made                                    by a Spanish instrument maker.               

The ballpoint pen was invented                           by a Hungarian named Biro.

The first tape cassettes were designed                by a Dutch company.

The raincoat was invented                                   by a Scotsman called Macintosh.

Each year 3000 million flowers are grown         in Holland.

The first motorcycle was built                             by a French company in 1869.

The first antibiotic was invented                         by British bacteriologist A.Fleming.

The Volkswagen “Beetle” was designed             by Ferdinand Porsche.

 

Task 7. Quiz “Features of the European Countries”

How much do you know about European countries? Do this quiz. All questions have three variants of answers. You must find which is correct. If you know the answer you must raise your hand. If it is correct the team will get one point. If your answer is wrong the second team will be allowed to give the answer. (1 point for each correct fact)

Task 8. Listening. Video presentation “Top European Holiday Destinations”

You will hear the author telling about Top European Holiday Destinations. Listen to please attentively because you should make next task. It is to read the following statements and decide if they are true or false. The winner is the team which gives more correct answers (1 point for each correct answer) 

  1. You can see Michelangelo’s David and other great works of Renaissance arts in the various museums in Florence. (true)
  2. Venice is also a shopper’s haven. (false/Rome)

Task 9.  Game “Crosses and Noughts”.

Task 9 is a game “Crosses and Noughts”. You know the rules of this game. You must give the name of the country to these places of interest. If you know the country you must raise your hand. If your answer is correct the team will get one point. If your answer is wrong the second team will be allowed to give the answer. (1 point for each correct answer)
