Subject:  Introducing the Beatles  

Lesson type: Skills Lesson (Reading & Listening)

Objectives:       1) to enhance students’ cultural awareness

                         2) to provide a precondition for successful intercultural  

                            competence

                         3) to build up students’ sociocultural competence

                         4) to develop students’ reading and listening skills

Equipment:       a laptop, handouts, coloured pencils, the Beatles music video

Procedure:

I. Introduction

1. Greeting

T.: Good afternoon, class! Today we’ll have an unusual lesson. Because we aren’t going to learn English, for it’s boring. Today we are going to sing English, for it’s fun!  Today I’d like to let you know some facts about the Beatles, internationally famous rock band, and about Yellow Submarine, one of their most famous songs. So, Yellow Submarine by the Beatles is the subject of our today’s lesson.

II. Main stage

Activity 1

T.: Look at your screens, please. Slide show comes first. Introducing the Beatles  / Slide Show

Activity 2  

T.: Now, let’s have a short watch and listen to the song now.

Activity 3

T.: Now,  I’ll hand out the lyrics and invite you to read it. The Beatles used short words in the lyrics because they wanted this song to be easy for kids. Let’s read it line by line.

Yellow Submarine by the Beatles

In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines.
So we sailed on to the sun
Till we found the sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine.

Chorus:

We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine.

And our friends are all aboard,

Many more of them live next door

And the band begins to play…

Activity 4

T.:  And now,  I’m going to read out the lyrics, but when I stop you have to complete the phrase.

Teacher: In the town         Children: where I was born

               Lived a man                        who sailed to sea

               And he told                          us of his life

               In the land                          of submarine

T.: Let’s sing karaoke now!  (Ss watch the video and sing along)

T.: When I listen to this song I usually think of holidays. Please, give your associations related to this song. (Suggested answers: sea, friends, seashells, beach, fun, ship, water, holidays, sail, sun, relax, adventures)

Activity 7

T.: Take the lyrics handouts now. Use the blank side to illustrate this song. I’ll play the music again and you’ll have time until the end of the song . What are you drawing? How nice it is! Describe your friend’s picture!

T.: Listen to the song and fill in the gaps with a word you hear:
