T: Good morning, dear pupils and guests! You are welcome at our today’s lesson .  It is dedicated to the greatest and a true genius of the world’s literature English writer , the magnificent play-writer, who has ever lived ,William Shakespeare.( slide 2). We often hear the quotations from the plays of this world –known poet and play-writer but not everyone knows who their author is. Now you’ll see some of them and try to translate them.(slide 2)

“To be or not to be, that is a question”

“But love is blind, lovers cannot see”

“All the world’s a stage and all the men and women are merely players

“Hell is empty and all devils are here”

‘The course of true love never did run smooth

T: It is very important for you to know as much as possible about his life and biography. So let’s get to know some facts about his life and work.

P: Early years.

William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. He was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His father, John Shakespeare, was an artisan. William was the third child in the family. His parents had eight children in total. William went to Stratford grammar school.

(slide4)     In 1582 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, who was the daughter of the local landowner. At that time Shakespeare was 18 years old and Anne was 8 years older than him. In 1583 Anne gave birth to their daughter Susanna. In 1585 the couple had twins – son Hamnet and daughter Judith. Unfortunately, Hamnet , the only son of William Shakespeare, died at the age of 11.

P: Life in London

Later Shakespeare moved  to London. He lived and worked in this city for many years. During that time Shakespeare wrote most of his plays and became a successful playwright. His troupe was among the leading playing companies in London.(slide5)

In 1599 a theatre was built on the south bank of the River Thames. It was named the Globe. This was the theatre where Shakespeare’s company performed. Work at the theatre made Shakespeare a wealthy person. He was not only a playwright, he also took part in performances.

P: Later years

Several  years  before his death Shakespeare moved to Stratford. He  died on 23 April 1616 on his birthday. He was 52 years old. Some research shows that at the end of his life he was in poor health.(slide3)

P: Shakespeare’s works

Among his works there are such masterpieces of the world literature as “Romeo and Juliet”, “Othello”, ”King Lear”, ‘Hamlet”,  “A midsummer night’s dream”. Apart from that Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets.(slide6, slide7)

William Shakespeare’s influence extends from theatre and literature to present-day movies, Western philosophy, and the English language itself.

T: Shakespeare’s sonnets are devoted to love and death,  friendship . He showed  the real life and attitudes between people. I think   it’s time to listen to one of his sonnet. (Sonnet 18)

Summarizing

T: Homework: Try to do your own literary translation of sonnet 154

T: Thanks for the lesson. All of you worked hard and intensive. That’s why your marks are excellent.

Let’s summarize our lesson. One proverb says: To know everything is to know nothing”. It means that you should never stop learning. Read a lot, watch films, listen to English songs, use the Internet, try to find new information and facts about English and Britain. If you know more languages, you know more about different countries and you’ll be able to travel around the world without any problems. Remember:” How many  languages you know so many times you are a man”.

I hope this proverb will be the motto of your life.
